Re: Measuring Interest in Basic Greek Composition

I expect to be quite embarrassed by my lack of practice but count me in.

Greek and English Dialogues for Use in Schools

I ran across a copy of Greek and English Dialogues for Use in Schools by John Stuart Blackie in Google books. I am somewhat intrigued by the approach and I was wondering if anyone has used this resource? l After taking a quick look it looks like the grammar is ancient but some of the vocabulary seem...

Greek Readers for attic

I just ran across several texts by Geoffrey Steadman at http://geoffreysteadman.com/. They can be downloaded from here or you can purchase a hard copy from Amazon. They include Plato's Symposium, Sophocles' Oedipus Tyrannus, Herodotus' Histories Book I, selections from Homer, and others. The readers...

Re: 1 Timothy 2:11-12 archived threads

It is my understanding that αὐθεντεῖν is very rare in earlier texts. I think I saw some claim that there are only 7 uses in extant texts. I don't have those available so I can only rely on what others have claimed. Could someone with greater resources give us a few texts to compare? Sincerely, Micha...

Re: 1 Timothy 2:11-12 archived threads

Actually, I wasn't referring to my earlier supposition but to an article by Carroll Osburn--Osburn, Carroll D. "AUQENTEW (1 Timothy 2:12)." Restoration Quarterly. vol. 24. no. 4 (1981): 1-12. But also see Martin Dibelius and Hans Conzelmann, The Pastoral Epistles: a Commentary on the Pasto...

Re: 1 Timothy 2:11-12 archived threads

Andrew Chapman wrote "None of them find any difficulty in verses 11 or 12, and they all seem to think that: διδάσκειν δὲ γυναικὶ οὐκ ἐπιτρέπω, οὐδὲ αὐθεντεῖν ἀνδρός, ἀλλ’ εἶναι ἐν ἡσυχίᾳ. means something like: But I permit not a woman to teach, nor to lord it over the man, but to be in silence&...

Re: James 2:18: my works, my faith, or both?

I may be all wet but here is my take on this passage. I believe the possessive pronoun usually follows the noun it modifies and James seems to follow that pattern. So...

Re: Individual MP3 files of the 50x or more vocab?

You might want to look at the files by Ted Hildebrandt at http://faculty.gordon.edu/hu/bi/ted_hildebrandt/new_testament_greek/00-GreekAudioVocabBuilder.htm. They go down to 9x. They may not be exactly what you want because they include a musical background and each mp3 includes more than one vocabul...

Hebrews 11:11 αὐτὴ Σάρρα στεῖρα

In Hebrews 11:11 αὐτὴ Σάρρα looks like the subject but δύναμιν εἰς καταβολὴν σπέρματος ἔλαβεν refers to a man’s part in procreation. The United Bible Society’s textual commentary suggests that καὶ αὐτὴ Σάρρα στεῖρα should be understood as a Hebraic circumstantial clause. I can accept that but it see...

Re: Hebrews 9:24 ἐμφανισθῆναι

Thanks for your patience. When I first asked the question I was making some notes on Hebrews. I forgot to include your answer in the notes and in a supreme senior moment I also forgot I had asked the question before. I have made the proper corrections in my notes and hopefully future senility won't ...
