Re: Theos in the NT, esp John 1

Appreciate the LOTR reference very much. It seems the authors of the this article are in accord with Wallace (and Robie in this thread) who references work by several scholars who point out the abuse of Colwell's Rule. Wallace describes the abuse as follows: The rule said that pre-verbal definite PN...

Re: Theos in the NT, esp John 1

If you have the time and energy, I recommend this article: Jan Van der Watt & Chrys Caragounis, «A Grammatical Analysis of John 1,1», Filología Neotestamentaria 21 (2008) 91-138 I made the time and found the energy today. Level-headed and accessible analysis. I am trying to find it in print, bu...

Re: Theos in the NT, esp John 1

Thanks Jonathon. I agree with and appreciate the reminder regarding the relationship between grammar and theology, and I am not being facetious. We all understand the limitations of written communication :-) I find it fascinating that there are so many points of view on "simple grammar" am...

Re: Theos in the NT, esp John 1

Thanks. Concerning John 1:1c, from this I hear that Wallace advocates for a grammatical rule (the pre-verbal anarthrous nominative predicate is by first assumption qualitative) that in his view gives the same theological satisfaction as does those who would apply Colwell's rule to make it definite. ...

Re: Theos in the NT, esp John 1

I mis-wrote, of course, what I meant was that Wallace maintains that the predicate nominative "theos" should be a quality of the logos, rather than treated as a definite predicate as in "The word was (the) God".

Theos in the NT, esp John 1

For John 1:1 Daniel B Wallace says that the predicate nominative "logos" should be qualitative rather than definite. Thus grammatically he would prefer "and the Word was divine", though he does not argue for a change from the definite approach for what sounds like pedagogical or ...

Friends of the Bridegroom? Mark 2:19

The ESV renders this as "wedding guests" and the NKJV says "friends of the bridegroom", and the interlinear Greek says "sons of the bridechamber". Does anyone know the scholarship behind either the ESV or NKJV renditions? Is this just another case of rendering "cor...

Re: Rendering Gender - Mark 13:24 in particular

I see that in my New King James it is "its light" and a long list of contributing scholars, taking two pages to present, signed a statement of verbal and plenary inspiration. On this evidence and the reasoned arguments presented by scholars here it would be entirely prudent of me to defer ...

[quote="Stephen Hughes" post_id=26960 . "I think that the pronoun is part of the Greek idiom and that it doesn't necessarily personify the moon even as an inanimate personification. If you are asking for a reality check about the English, here are a few thoughts." That is interes...
