Re: What areas need updating in Silva?
Thanks for the two helpful articles. Wendland's frames of reference, and Mike's chapter both help to refine the kinds of questions original language interpreters need to be asking behind any given passages wording. The illustration of the frames of reference being different for a Jewish perspective ...

What areas need updating in Silva?
Stirling Bartholomew, writing "Re: NT Word Study" mentioned that Biblical Words and Their Meaning by Moises Silva "is out of date but still useful". I was wondering what areas have been modified? Related to this question, I recently read something from Mike Aubrey which seemed to...

Re: ἐξίστημι in Acts 8:11
Grammar guessing as a way of better learning: Is it possible that τὸ... ἐξεστακέναι functions like substantive? And the accusative after it would then just read "for them"?

Koine Period
I have a mix of questions trying to get at what "mother tongue Greek speakers' did or did not have in common during the Hellenistic age. Any insights are greatly appreciated. The Koine period seems to be quite multi-layered in terms of language in use. There was an Attic revival, and as well as...

Re: Translating Athanasius
Thanks one and all. A very enjoyable exercise. Ken, I did indeed turn the middle biazetai into a passive, in an attempt to convey the feeling from ἀλλὰ ἐκεῖ βιάζεταί με being 'fronted' in the sentence. I wonder how much force fronting actually adds? This is one of those 'is that really true?" m...

Re: Translating Athanasius
Ever deeper, ever deeper goes a journey with Cyril and Nestorius as traveling companions. Thanks for the articles Stirling. James, I had indeed not seen the context at all...I had captured the text on TLG while running a search on biazetai. I guess our writer must have been a pseudo A. Old Athanasio...

Re: Translating Athanasius
Thanks Stirling and Ken. A quick trip to Lampe's shows me I stumbled into a theological thicket. It was a term Nestorius' used which earned him considerable ire from Cyril. Thanks for posting the larger context, and Ken thanks for pointing out the basic endings I overlooked.

Translating Athanasius
Could I ask my fellow B-Greekers if I have captured the sense of Athanasius' words? 36. ATHANASIUS Theol. Sermo in nativitatem Christi [Sp.] {2035.089} Volume 28 page 968 line 4 σάρκα οὐκ ἂν ἔλαβεν ἐξ αὐτῆς ὁ Θεὸς Λόγος; ἀλλὰ ἐκεῖ βιάζεταί με ὁ Εὐαγγελιστὴς βοῶν μεγάλῃ τῇ φωνῇ· «Ὁ Λόγος σὰρξ ἐγένετο...

Re: unknown form or word
Very interesting, Stephan. I have long appreciated your breadth of investigation into Greek. I've come to Hesychius fairly late in my research into βιαζεται. LSJ and BDAG do give more shades of meaning, but LSJ adds the English gloss 'violence' to many of its usage descriptions. Unquestionably biaze...
