Re: VIDEO for the Biblical Language Center summer fluency/pedagogy workshops

So your new curriculum is based on the Colloquia? In short, yes :) The longer answer is that the colloquia are one of several main driving forces that help shape the material, but the colloquia are probably the most significant of these several driving forces. I outline five main principles here: h...

VIDEO for the Biblical Language Center summer fluency/pedagogy workshops

Randall Buth already posted about this, but I thought I would add the video explaining the upcoming fluency/pedagogy workshops with Biblical Language Center, complete with me talking to a cartoon in Koine Greek :)

Re: How was αι in Hebrew PNs like Ιεσσαι read by Koine Greek speakers in early MSS of the New Testament?

That depends. If the larger language community is using manuscripts with spelling such as these that overtly distinguish between the two pronunciations, then those communities would have also continued pronouncing Hebrew names as [ai] rather than [ε]. Conversely if the community is not using such m...

How was αι in Hebrew PNs like Ιεσσαι read by Koine Greek speakers in early MSS of the New Testament?

Many years ago someone at a Biblical Language Center Greek workshop asked this question: If the Greek diphthong represented by αι had already shifted to a monophthong of the [ε] or [e̞] quality by the Koine period (no longer historical *[ai]), does that mean that Hebrew proper names (PNs) like Ἰεσσα...

Re: Why not start with modern Greek?

Let me just add two quick points to the discussion. 1) My ideal 3-year curriculum would be as follows: Year 1: concurrent Beginners' Modern Greek and Beginners' Koine Greek as separate classes (both taught communicatively, but perhaps at 2/3 pace since you are taking both) summer between year 1 and ...

Re: Why not start with modern Greek?

Let me perhaps sum up my general question in the following manner (again, thinking practically as a teacher). Let's assume the following ... - class meets 1 hour per week three times a week - total curriculum is 2 years long - ultimate objective is proficiency in Koine Greek (not necessarily the NT ...

Re: Why not start with modern Greek?

After speaking with numerous Greeks in Athens and presenting them with the Koine of the NT, I can't help but wonder if this isn't because of the way we determine competency. Being a native Greek speaker is perhaps no advantage for parsing via American academic standards. But in terms of actually un...

Re: Why not start with modern Greek?

I agree with a lot of what has been said above, but I just want to make a few points below that I think will be helpful... It's obviously the same situation with Hebrew. Learning modern Hebrew will only assist in learning biblical Hebrew, but learning modern Hebrew is not sufficient for proficiency ...

Re: Jonly Joihin - Thesis on δε

From the thesis, page 70 (pdf 82): From the survey of Classical and Koine Greek grammars and lexica, there are two opposing views of δέ due to the different approaches: traditional (historicalcomparative) and discourse linguistic grammar. The traditional grammars and lexica of both Classical and Ko...
