Re: Logos 8 Academic Professional

One of the nicest things about Logos (besides how fast you can search BDAG/Brill/Louw-Nida) is the way you can search for phrases. Take John 1:51: 51 καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ· Ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν, ὄψεσθε τὸν οὐρανὸν ἀνεῳγότα καὶ τοὺς ἀγγέλους τοῦ θεοῦ ἀναβαίνοντας καὶ καταβαίνοντας ἐπὶ τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου. ...

Re: 2 questions on Eph 3:14-19

I can't really give an answer to the second question -- it's more about how you conceptualize and outline the text after you understand the syntax. For the first question, if τούτου is cataphoric, what reasons are being given in what follows? Nothing, really, and so it makes much better sense for i...

Re: 2 questions on Eph 3:14-19

I'd second Barry on question 1 regarding possible cataphoric reference. My charting takes 3:13 as signaling the close of a digression begun in 3:2, and takes 3:14 as the resumption of the theme suspended in 3:1. If there is a viable option for an anaphoric reading versus cataphoric, I'd recommend g...

2 questions on Eph 3:14-19

I've been wrestling with Eph 3:14-21 and have two questions, if someone would be kind enough to help. 14 Τούτου χάριν κάμπτω τὰ γόνατά μου πρὸς τὸν [m]πατέρα, 15 ἐξ οὗ πᾶσα πατριὰ ἐν οὐρανοῖς καὶ ἐπὶ γῆς ὀνομάζεται, 16 ἵνα [n]δῷ ὑμῖν κατὰ [o]τὸ πλοῦτος τῆς δόξης αὐτοῦ δυνάμει κραταιωθῆναι διὰ τοῦ πν...

Re: 2nd year Greek for middle/high schoolers

I have produced over 10 short animated/cartoon videos in Koine Greek (biblical passages, early church fathers, koine greek novel, colloquia) that may be helpful for a child learning. My son is only 1 year old, so I cannot test them on him yet, but I would love to hear how a 5th grader does with the...

Re: The negation of perfect verb forms

However, how do you think that οἶδα came to be used with a present sense in Greek, and why would nōvī in Latin do the same thing? BTW, fun fact, noscō is cognate with the Greek γιγνώσκω (in early Latin it is spelled gnoscō), which is not used in the same way in the perfect. Not just Greek or Latin,...

The negation of perfect verb forms

Has anyone ever studied the negation of perfect verb forms? Any grammars talk about it? I'm wondering if coming at it from the negated perfect examples would shed light on the perfect's aspectual value. What exactly is being denied? Why is the perfect being used? And does this help us understand the...

Re: The imperfect of Romans 9:3

Let me try this one more time, with the benefit of a decent night's sleep and a couple days to think about it and study it. I've still been wrestling with Decker's view of indicative verbs as being aspect only. Partly because of the feedback I've gotten from this website, I've been deliberately tryi...

Re: The imperfect of Romans 9:3

I was reading Robertson tonight, and his discussion of the potential imperfect (885) helped quite a bit. And then I saw I got lots of helpful replies. "The “Potential” Imperfect. This is a peculiar use of the tense for present time, where the present ind. fails to meet the requirement of the si...

The imperfect of Romans 9:3

I've been reading through Romans and was struck by the imperfect in 9:3: ηὐχόμην γὰρ ἀνάθεμα εἶναι αὐτὸς ἐγὼ ἀπὸ τοῦ Χριστοῦ ὑπὲρ τῶν ἀδελφῶν μου τῶν συγγενῶν μου κατὰ σάρκα, English translations tend to treat this as a subjunctive. ESV: For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from ...
