Re: Modern Greek verses Koine Greek John 1:1

Scott, As I said, I was out of my comfort zone and ended up learning something. (thanks!) I also used a poor example. The NWT of Titus 2.13 …..blessed hope and glorious “φανερόση τοῦ μεγάλου θεού καί τοῦ Σωτήρα μάς τοῦ Ἰησοῦ χριστοῦ,” Byzantine: “ἐπιφάνειαν τῆς δόξης τοῦ μεγάλου [θεοῦ καὶ σωτῆρος] ἡ...

Re: Modern Greek verses Koine Greek John 1:1

OK Scott, I suppose one could say (if they clung to a self-refuting strict evidentialist epistemology) that was Modern. Dean...your above comment creates a bit of "cognitive dissonance" for me... Now you know how Clint feels each day and Hitch as well; before he passed away. :D Enough of my misplace...

Re: Modern Greek verses Koine Greek John 1:1

First, there is no purely Modern Demotic online version I could track down... Dean, Are you saying that the NWT in modern Greek which is available online is not purely Modern Demotic? http://www.jw.org/el/εκδόσεις/αγία-γραφή-online/Ιωάννης/1#v-1 Hi Scott, I suppose one could say (if they clung to a...

Re: Modern Greek verses Koine Greek John 1:1

David, There is not one even one (tautological alert) jot or tittle of a reason for any apology. Your contributions to things I have learned “lurking” and everyone else’s on B-Greek far outweigh any I have made. Further, this thread sent me on a fishing expedition which yielded a number of rather in...

Re: Modern Greek verses Koine Greek John 1:1

David, I pulled this from the unbound bible link; I had not seen this website before. 1 Cor 14.1 “Εαν λαλω τας γλωσσας των ανθρωπων και των αγγελων, αγαπην δε μη εχω, εγεινα χαλκος ηχων η κυμβαλον αλαλαζον.” (called Modern on the unbound) Ἐὰν ταῖς γλώσσαις τῶν ἀνθρώπων λαλῶ καὶ τῶν ἀγγέλων, ἀγάπην δ...

Re: ὶνα πας ὸ πιστευων

Jason, I could be wrong, I'm not home to check myself, but is not πιστεύων a'present active participle in the Greek. If I'm correct, Participles denote a continuous action. So the could be both presently and continuously believing or having faith in Jesus. One who stops believing would not be being ...

Re: Phil 1:29

I'd call this a case of anacoluthon; I think that Paul started out to say "ὑμῖν ἐχαρίσθη τὸ ὑπὲρ Χριστοῦ πάσχειν" -- but that he decided to insert another notion that "suffering for Christ" must have as its necessary foundation. “I'd call this a case of anacoluthon; I think that Paul started out to...

Re: John 1:9

Roger, I apologize I was unclear. In my industry, I have habit of sticking to short and direct replies (lest people drive me nuts). This is not a venue for “assumptions,” or short answers. Allow me to clarify: When I said I agree with you (I meant grammatically) and continued to comment about parent...

Re: John 1:9

Seems to me that you've ignored the obvious majority take on the verse, which is that ἦν... ἐρχόμενον is periphrastic with τὸ φῶς τὸ ἀληθινόν as the subject. This is also how the NA27 distinguishes it through use of commas. Jason, don't shoot the beginner, ;) however the NET notes indicate this is ...
