Re: Phillipians 3:3 Is πνεύματι a dative of direct object here?

I did a quick search of πνεύματι in the bare dative and found the following examples. I see that at Luke 9:42 it is used as a dative complement but πνεύματι is a clear reference to an agent, in this case an unclean spirit. ἔτι δὲ προσερχομένου αὐτοῦ ἔρρηξεν αὐτὸν τὸ δαιμόνιον καὶ συνεσπάραξεν· ἐπετί...

Phillipians 3:3 Is πνεύματι a dative of direct object here?

Phillipians 3:3 ἡμεῖς γάρ ἐσμεν ἡ περιτομή, οἱ πνεύματι θεοῦ λατρεύοντες καὶ καυχώμενοι ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ καὶ οὐκ ἐν σαρκὶ πεποιθότες, Hello all. It has been suggested to me that at Phillipians 3:3 that πνεύματι should be read as a dative of direct object and so mean "We are the ones worshipping ...

Re: Exod 4:16 and the be verb

Ah! It was just pointed out to me that ἔσται is also middle voice and that many future tense verbs tend to be middle voice.

Exod 4:16 and the be verb

καὶ αὐτός σοι προσλαλήσει πρὸς τὸν λαόν, καὶ αὐτὸς ἔσται σου στόμα, σὺ δὲ αὐτῷ ἔσῃ τὰ πρὸς τὸν θεόν. (Exodus 4:16 LXX1) What significance is there between the use of the active voice ἔσται and the passive voice ἔσῃ in the two clauses? Is ἔσῃ deponent so that there is no difference? What is the force...

Re: John 8:58

While we are looking at possible ways to understand ἐγώ εἰμι, it's worth pointing to these two uses earlier in the same chapter: John 8:24 εἶπον οὖν ὑμῖν ὅτι ἀποθανεῖσθε ἐν ταῖς ἁμαρτίαις ὑμῶν· ἐὰν γὰρ μὴ πιστεύσητε ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι, ἀποθανεῖσθε ἐν ταῖς ἁμαρτίαις ὑμῶν. John 8:28 εἶπεν οὖν ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Ὅτα...

Re: Καιροὶ ἐθνῶν at Luke 21:24

Lu 21:24: “Καὶ πεσοῦνται στόματι μαχαίρης καὶ αἰχμαλωτισθήσονται εἰς τὰ ἔθνη πάντα, καὶ Ἰερουσαλὴμ ἔσται πατουμένη ὑπὸ ἐθνῶν, ἄχρι οὗ πληρωθῶσιν καιροὶ ἐθνῶν.” The phrase καιροὶ ἐθνῶν is used without the article. Does it refer to the world of mankind in general? In such case, does Lu 21:24 mean tha...

Re: John 8:58

Jonathan what I’m attempting to do is reason through the possible constructions of the sentence and show why it can’t be answering the question of identity, nor can it both answer identity and age at the same time. It can only be answering how old Jesus is and so ειμι has to be signaling time, past ...

Re: John 8:58

https://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/grammar/british-grammar/adjuncts See the distinction between adjuncts and complements. Πριν Αβρααμ γενεσθαι completes εγω ειμι. It is necessary to the meaning of the sentence. You are throwing around a lot of grammatical terminology that comes from different plac...

Re: John 8:58

1.) If it is an adjunct then it can be dispensed with without the main clause losing meaning. This isn't true. Adverbials clearly change the meaning of main verbs. "He walked quickly," "he walked slowly," and just "he walked" all give different mental pictures to the h...
