Re: Reflection on teaching interactively.
Wow, Stephen, this is amazing! I have a feeling I'm going to be returning to your post repeatedly as I proceed on my journey. Even the snapshots of what you're doing are something to aspire to; I'm sure the actual class is even better. This is also helpful for when I get to reading Acts 27 myself. :...

Re: Teaching my first class
A few more thoughts - You might spend some time either before the first class or at the start of the first lass, finding out what the students want to do/learn. Why have they come to the class? I thought a bit along those lines, but I like the idea of being really explicit about that. "What ar...

Re: Teaching my first class
Since you'll have a projector you can use with your laptop, I thought you might be able to make use of some pictures I have collected for the purpose of learning Hebrew. Many of the pictures are labeled in Hebrew but you'll find sorted according to subject, religion, agriculture, geography, militar...

Re: Teaching my first class
What does your classroom look like? Is this face-to-face without tech, or do you have a projector and a computer to work with, or ... I haven't actually been in the particular room (just assigned this week), but I've asked. In the room I'll have a laptop, projector, DVD player, and (low-tech) white...

Re: Teaching my first class
This seems critical. This way I can choose texts that best cover whatever I need to cover, without worrying about more advanced features. Nice! I agree that this is critical. You can only cover so much in a lesson. I'm guessing that in a 12 week course, with an hour per week, you might want to cove...

Overview of teaching methods
While preparing to teach my first class , I found this overview of different EFL teaching methods, which helped me relate the various approaches. It doesn't mention some of the methods I've heard about here (like TPRS and SIOP), but the timeline was especially enlightening. http://blog.tjtaylor.net/...

Re: Teaching my first class
Oops... meant to say "it's not really a curriculum".(ἡ ὁδός, for instance, has chapters about the body, animals, greetings, number, emotions, etc. Of course, it's really a curriculum IMO.)

Re: Teaching my first class
I think I'd want to mix in more conversational stuff in Greek (πῶς ἔχεις; εὖ ἔχω! κτλ.), but what you've detailed here, Jonathan, can get us to the text or any other topic and looks to be a very versatile exercise. Thank you very much! Sure - no reason not to mix that in. I think the Polis book is ...

Re: Teaching my first class
Are you struggling with the communicative approach yourself? Are you good at it or trying to pick it up yourself? Is it something that you have done long enough that you can reflect on its value within a wider context of the other teaching methodologies that could be employed? Sorry, very busy last...
