Re: Perseus Scaife Viewer

Excellent. Playing a bit with it, but I don't see how to check morphology (parsing). First, set the text mode to highlight: Screen Shot 2018-05-25 at 12.15.46.png Then click on a word to highlight it: Screen Shot 2018-05-25 at 12.16.03.png Information about that word appears in the right-hand pane:...

Just stumbled across the Scaife Viewer at Perseus. Check it out. Massive improvement over old Perseus.

Re: Papias: Ματθαῖος μὲν οὖν Ἑβραΐδι διαλέκτῳ τὰ λόγια συνετάξατο

Thanks, Stephen and Randall - very helpful information. It is very likely that a Hebrew Gospel did exist and a translation of it influenced the composition of the synoptic gospels. Two quickie supports. 1. A Hebrew narrative book can be titled sefer divre XXXX, ספר דברי אאאא 'book of the things/word...

The harder issue is to determine just what composition he was thinking of.
Anything useful to read on that question? Or can you walk us through the possibilities?

I'm surprised I couldn't find a discussion of this on B-Greek. Stephen Carlson translates this as Hebrew manner of ...

Re: definite article

A follow up to that. If an article is uses with a noun regarding an event, would that always be considered a one time event? No, there are other uses. For instance, consider how the article is used in Matthew 12: Ἐν ἐκείνῳ τῷ καιρῷ ἐπορεύθη ὁ Ἰησοῦς τοῖς σάββασιν διὰ τῶν σπορίμων· οἱ δὲ μαθηταὶ αὐτ...

Re: definite article

The article is never indefinite. We don't call it a 'definite article' simply because there is no indefinite article to contrast it with, but it does function a lot like the English definite article - with exceptions and idiomatic uses, of course. At a beginning level, I think Funk's description is ...

Re: Complete paradigms for all GNT verbs?

"Greek Morphology, Verbs and Nouns for Koine Greek" at biblicallanguagecenter.com. Highly recommended. Between this book and Kalos Beautiful Greek Software, I don't use anything else these days. Unfortunately, I cannot find Kalos just now and so can't give a link. Looks like it is down - there's an...

Re: Meaning of HUPARCHWN

I don't think any lexicon would support that, and there's a reason standard translations don't come out that way.

Perhaps it would be helpful to start with a lexicon and concordance entry for ὑπάρχω. That will give you the normal understanding and examples of where the word is used.
