Re: τὸ δὲ σῶμα τοῦ Χριστοῦ at Colossians 2:17

Oh dear, I thought that this was okey for me to use: http://biblehub.com/text/colossians/2-17.htm I didn't realize that this biblehub greek was not Hellenistic Greek. Sorry I've been looking at this greek on this site of Biblehub: Nestle GNT 1904, Stephanus Textus Receptus 1550, etc I haven't been ...

Re: Rendering imperfective into English (an English question?)

The example of Mt 4.11 shows how English can upset Greek reading. In Greek the story ending with an imperfective (open-ended) fade-out. There is no special focus on "beginning", just a description that closes and lets the scene "fade out." I think that's true of many of the NET examples - the state...

Re: τὸ δὲ σῶμα τοῦ Χριστοῦ at Colossians 2:17

That's one way of understanding the genitive predicate here - τοῦ Κυρίου ἐσμέν in Romans means "we are the Lord's". With this interpretation, τὸ σῶμα τοῦ Χριστοῦ means "the body is Christ's", which can be phrased various ways in English. "the body belongs to Christ" is one of these ways. Thanks for...

Re: τὸ δὲ σῶμα τοῦ Χριστοῦ at Colossians 2:17

Oops, sorry, got the postpositive thingy around the wrong way, mixing it up with prepositive. I think I can recall post as being in relation to the word posted before. Pre is in relation to the word proceeding it. Whew over 30 years since I did this grammar stuff at school. Thanks for pointing that...

Re: Rendering imperfective into English (an English question?)

I have been looking at the examples Mounce gives in the NET translation, and none of the ones I have looked at so far compels an inceptive interpretation apart from a clear aorist in the near context. Here are the first few. The English in each example is his proposed inceptive interpretation, but I...

Re: τὸ δὲ σῶμα τοῦ Χριστοῦ at Colossians 2:17

Just to confirm your definition: So this is telling us about the "body" of that which is to come, and saying that it is τοῦ Χριστοῦ Putting your words into the scripture reads: do not let someone judge you in food or in drink or in participating in a feast ἢ νεομηνίας ἢ σαββάτων or a new moon or Sa...

Greek Pangrams

A pangram is a word or a sentence that contains every letter of the alphabet at least once. For English, this one is famous: The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. I needed pangrams for Greek for something I am doing and thought someone else might be interested. Here are some for modern and cl...

Re: τὸ δὲ σῶμα τοῦ Χριστοῦ at Colossians 2:17

Yes I know this is not easy greek and well above me, thus my reason for coming onto this forum. Yes I agree with you on really needing to translate entire sentences to get any feel at all, and the syntax of the sentence is essential. One important thing to keep in mind: in the beginner's forum, the...

Re: τὸ δὲ σῶμα τοῦ Χριστοῦ at Colossians 2:17

Hi Brendon, First off, you really need to translate entire sentences to get any feel at all, and the syntax of the sentence is essential. Google Translate does not understand New Testament Greek and will give you silly answers. So let's start with a complete sentence: Μὴ οὖν τις ὑμᾶς κρινέτω ἐν βρώσ...

Re: Rendering imperfective into English (an English question?)

Some grammars talk about different types of imperfects (conative, inceptive, etc.), but as I've been working through Mark, I'm finding Rodney Decker's approach (Temporal Deixis) to be working beautifully. Imperfects are background information to help us understand the story line better. Rijksbaron'...
