Re: Why is λόγος consistently translated as "word"?

Actually, BDAG does have "utterance". He has "word" but, as I read it, in apposition to "utterance" so if I'm right about that than BDAG isn't really even offering "word" in the sense of lexeme/verbum. But it seems to me that the apposition kind of got lost. This is where the word "word" appears in...

Re: Why is λόγος consistently translated as "word"?

This might explain why the NT usage of the word slants slightly more toward "utterance" than does BDAG; it could be a mild Hebraism. You haven't convinced me that you have a better grasp of this than Danker (of BDAG). I don't really understand the methodology you use for lexicography here. How are ...

This might explain why the NT usage of the word slants slightly more toward "utterance" than does BDAG; it could be a mild Hebraism. Here's one possible guess: in an oral culture, if you say "word", people generally think of an oral word. In a culture where we grow up thinking so much about written...

Re: In Acts 11:17 what is the nuance if any of the aorist participle?

Acts 11:17 17 εἰ οὖν τὴν ἴσην δωρεὰν ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς ὁ θεὸς ὡς καὶ ἡμῖν **πιστεύσασιν** ἐπὶ τὸν κύριον Ἰησοῦν Χριστόν, ⸀ἐγὼ τίς ἤμην δυνατὸς κωλῦσαι τὸν θεόν; Is it acting sort of like a pluperfect? Hmmm, more like a perfect, no? In Greek, the aorist often does have a force much like the perfect, esp...

Re: Apocopic word forms

I don't know what you are doing, but I should mention that for many applications it is very helpful to have both representations in your data. For instance, if you are using XML or HTML, you might have a representation like this: <w class="prep" osisId="Matt.12.45!5" n="400120450050010" lemma="μετά"...

Re: John 8:25

The "to you" is dative and cannot be the direct object of this verb. The DO has to be accusative. But wait. We have an accusative word we have not used it is "τὴν ἀρχὴν", the Beginning. It needs to be placed here. λαλῶ is a verb of expression, the content of what he said is not the direct object of...

Re: Policy: Let the moderators do the moderating

B-Greek has always been low volume, and there has always been someone saying that it was dying, that it was too restrictive, etc. There are also more alternatives these days, including various Facebook groups. I think there are still things that work better in this kind of forum, and we continue to...

Re: αθανασιαν

First off, I wouldn't put too much stock in a privative, I would look at how the entire word is used, in context, in various settings. What lexicons are you using? Here's Louw & Nida, which is often helpful for teasing out distinctions among related words. 23.124 θνητός, ή, όν: pertaining to being l...

I tried the link for the EPE given above, and got "No text available for the selected Bible." I trolled to other sections of the GNT for the EPEdition, and also got "No text available for the selected Bible."

I think I fixed the link. Does it work for you now?

Re: John 8:25

While I have the Exegetical Summary open ... I think this is helpful: LEXICON—a. ἀρχή (LN 67.65) ([BAGD 1.b, p. 112):, ‘at all’ [BAGD], ‘beginning’ [BAGD, LN]. The question Τὴν ἀρχὴν ὅ τι καὶ λαλῶ ὑμῖν; ‘Why do I speak to you at all? [NRSV] is also translated ‘How is it that I can speak to you at al...
