Re: The negation of perfect verb forms

It's one example out of many. I also gave ἔοικα. Please tell me how "the perfect refers simply to completed action" in James 1:6: αἰτείτω δὲ ἐν πίστει μηδὲν διακρινόμενος · ὁ γὰρ διακρινόμενος ἔοικεν κλύδωνι θαλάσσης ἀνεμιζομένῳ καὶ ῥιπιζομένῳ. Really? You're doing this? State predicates don't beha...

eads me to think that maybe our modern linguistically informed semantics might not be as accurate as we thought.
Ah, well, I would dispute that the "there's no essential semantic difference" isn't the product of "a modern linguistically informed semantics." ;)

Re: Scribes don’t augment right

Without checking I don't know for sure, but I'd expect that the majority of unaugmented verbs in Perseus are in poetry, particularly since Perseus is heavily weighted toward the Classical period. "Both the syllabic and temporal augment are frequently omitted in metrical inscriptures of all periods w...

Re: New Linguistic Theories to learn

On what topic?

The field is huge, so without a specific point of reference it's difficult to make suggestions.

Re: Is the article genitve article anaphoric at 2 Peter 1:11?

I’m asking for a friend who posed this question to me: Does the article του that is construed with κυριου at 2Peter 1:11 act anaphorically pointing back to του κυριου in verse 8? 2 Peter 1:8-11 8 ταῦτα γὰρ ὑμῖν ὑπάρχοντα καὶ πλεονάζοντα οὐκ ἀργοὺς οὐδὲ ἀκάρπους καθίστησιν εἰς τὴν τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰη...

Re: The imperfect of Romans 9:3

I'm not sure what the question is. It is an unrealized wish and Greek uses the imperfect for that. English has a different idiom. As for a possible use of the subjunctive, we're not dealing with a dependent clause, where most subjunctives are found, but an independent clause marked with the connect...

Re: On the syntactical description John 5:7,8

What Barry said.

To add: the participle needs to agree with τρεῖς...which is non-neuter (i.e. the masculine & feminine forms are identical). If anything here is interesting with regard to gender is the shift here: οἱ τρεῖς εἰς τὸ ἕν εἰσιν, but even then. It's just "interesting", not ungrammatical.

Re: Contract Verbs

Most recently is Willi's new book (2018): The Origin of the Greek Verb: https://amzn.to/2HAmMx9 I have just read this book. It is super-technical, especially on the PIE and pre-PIE side. Fascinating, with original, provocative proposals, and possibly more right than wrong. I'll have to see what the...
