Re: Using masculine instead of neuter in John 6:9

Compare also
Gal 3:16 Καὶ τῷ σπέρματί σου, ὅς ἐστιν Χριστός.

A neuter noun may refer to a person in which case the masculine pronoun is used.

Re: John 21:7 τὸν ἐπενδύτην διεζώσατο - acc with middle

Stephen, I have not been following b-Greek much lately, but this post caught my eye as I was reading through some older posts. Are you sure that Peter was trying to swim ashore? Based partly on John 21:11, I have argued that he jumped into the water to wade ashore in the shallow water near where Jor...

Re: Matthew 25.40

In my view the context is important for understanding the intention of the grammar used. In v. 40, the king is speaking to those at his right side, the believers. He commends them for having helped people in need and he describes those who have been helped as "one of these my least significant ...

Re: ἐξέστημεν/σωφρονοῦμεν 2 Corinthians 5.13

εἴτε γὰρ ἐξέστημεν, θεῷ· εἴτε σωφρονοῦμεν, ὑμῖν. Should we understand the aorist to refer to past time, and the present to present time? Alfred Plummer wrote (in the Cambridge Greek Testament): 'For whether we went mad (it was) for God; or whether we are in our right mind, (it is) for you.' The cha...

Re: Joh 17,2 some questions on the sentence

Peter, I was thinking πᾶν was nominative, but it may also be accusative according to Blass, Debrunner 466: 466. The resumption of a suspended case by a pronoun in another case (the suspended subject [or object] Rob. 436; Abbot 32) is a construction belonging to the popular idiom (cf. Raderm.2 219; a...

Re: Joh 17,2 some questions on the sentence

Peter, I am inclined to agree with you. Robertson says about the vernacular κοινή that "The nominativus pendens is much in evidence." (Page 73). So, I would take πᾶν in ἵνα πᾶν ὃ δέδωκας αὐτῷ, δώσει αὐτοῖς ζωὴν αἰώνιον as a nominative, neuter referring to each and every being. The relative...

Re: John 1:17: is it hendiadys?

While hendiadys makes reasonable sense, I'm wondering about the use of the article with both nouns. I found the answer to this in Blass and Debrunner, where there are examples of hendiadys with the article with both nouns: James 5:10: τῆς κακοπαθείας καὶ τῆς μακροθυμίας (of perseverance in sufferin...

Re: John 1:9

[John 1:9] ην το φως το αληθινον ο φωτιζει παντα ανθρωπον ερχομενον εις τον κοσμον I've always thought that there were only two possibilities: (1) "το φως το αληθινον ο ..." is the subject of the periphrastic "ην ερχομενον ..."; "the true light which illuminates every man w...

Re: Krino vs. Krima (judgment)

Jonathan, Thanks for your added thoughts. While I was not thinking in terms of final judgment, I had two points in mind. First, since John 3:17 and 12:47 as Tim pointed out say that Jesus did not come into the world for the purpose of judging the world, but to save it, it sounds as a contradiction t...

Re: Krino vs. Krima (judgment)

Hi, I'm preaching through John's gospel and have come to John 9.39 where Jesus says that it was "for judgment that he came into the world." This is sandwiched between a couple other statements about judgment in which Jesus says he did not come to judge (3.17 and 12.47). In 9.39 the greek ...
