Re: Emphatic?: Bracketed Inclusions

Constituent ordering principles within noun phrases (NPs) is related to those for clauses, but operates a little differently in that it is more driven by the preceding context than a clause. Levinsohn does a great job of outlining the principles in play and how they tend to operate here: https://sch...

Re: Verb aspect debate outside of Koine

I think you are trying to read texts, not to do linguistics. But try this exercise: print out a text in Greek (or use a word processor if you prefer). Color each verb according to aspect. Use a different indicator to distinguish primary tenses (perhaps a ⌋) from secondary tenses (perhaps a ⌞). Use ...

Re: Double articles

When I see two articles in a row, both refer to people, both refer to people by name: Ἰάκωβον τὸν τοῦ Ζεβεδαίου Ἰάκωβος ὁ τοῦ Ζεβεδαίου Ἰάκωβος ὁ τοῦ Ἁλφαίου Λευεὶν τὸν τοῦ Ἀλφαίου Ἰάκωβον τὸν τοῦ Ζεβεδαίου Ἰάκωβον τὸν τοῦ Ἁλφαίου Μαρία ἡ τοῦ Ἰακώβου Δαυεὶδ τὸν τοῦ Ἰεσσαί Μαρία ἡ τοῦ Κλωπᾶ These al...

Re: Double articles

I have question about double articles, such as what is found in Mark 3:18. It contains καὶ Ἰάκωβον τὸν τοῦ Ἁλφαίου . Why are there two articles instead of one? Wouldn’t this be the same as if Mark wrote καὶ Ἰάκωβον τοῦ Ἁλφαίου ? Howdy, Greek articles are an efficient way for writers to implicate so...

Re: perfect participle in Acts 13:48

Daniel et al., Here is a link to an article by Levinsohn that notes the mismatches between the English and Greek perfect, among other things. His abstract provides a great summary of the claims. https://benjamins.com/catalog/cilt.352.18lev Regarding the straight perfect vs. a periphrastic version, I...

Re: Relative pronouns as sentence separators

It may well be a separate clause, but the primary function of relative clauses in such cases is to connote a dependency relationship wrt what precedes compared to the use of a coordinating conjunction. This has the effect of taking what might have been several co-equal coordinate clauses, and subord...

Re: David Yoon on the Perfect Tense - 1 Cor 7:14

A couple clarifications. Do not take Dave as representative of all MacDiv scholars. There are the true believers, and there are those like Francis Pang, Christopher Land, and Cindy Westfall. I’ll leave it there. And the strawmanning I was referencing was what little engagement of GVR there’s been, m...

Re: David Yoon on the Perfect Tense - 1 Cor 7:14

Having heard the papers in person, there is not much new that comes out aside from some of Fanning’s (re)assessments. The book will also be boring because it won’t have Randall’s performance-art question. Nor will it include the other alternative (see GVR) that we made three steering committee membe...

Re: Where to find Septuagint manuscript transcriptions ?

I'm in a similar boat, so will add mine question. Has El Texto Antioqueno de la Biblia Griega been digitized, or is there a Lucianic version that has? I am digging into the discourse motivations for translation techniques of kaige features in Reigns. Thanks!
