Re: James 2:3 ὑπὸ τὸ ὑποπόδιόν μου
Jonathan, I presented a paper at SBL a few years ago on that part of James. I argued that the language there is best explained if we read the scene as taking place at an early Christian meal. You can see the paper here: http://danielstreett.wordpress.com/2011/11/28/james-2-and-the-lords-supper-sbl-2...

Re: Vocabulary / Week
Much of the discussion is problematic because of the following reasons: 1) Greek profs do not define what it means to 'learn' a vocab word. In most Greek classes it mean quite simply the ability to produce a one-word gloss for the word on a final exam. I hope we all realize that's not really a usefu...

Re: Living Koine: Who teaches it, and where?
Also, I believe John Schwandt at New St. Andrews in Moscow, ID, teaches Greek as a living language (and Latin, and perhaps Hebrew).

Re: Self Taught Living Koine-NT Audio-Free, Modern Accent?
Several years ago, I think perhaps in the 1980's, Dr. Spiros Zodhiates, who was a native speaker born on Cyprus to Greek parents, recorded the entire Greek NT from the Textus Receptus using the modern Greek accent. Later on, I just learned, he did one using the Nestle-Aland text. His recordings are...

Re: Mounce's Biblical Greek: A Compact Guide
Looks like ἡ σφηκιά might have already been stirred! And BTW, how many Greek profs would know how to say 'wasp's/hornet's nest' in Koine? I had to look it up, but that's something every 7-year old Alexandrian would have known (and a Biblical word--LXX Ex 23:28). Is it really too much to ask that Gre...

Re: Self Taught Living Koine ?
Mark, those are all really good suggestions! Matt, may I suggest that you skim through a book like Barry Farber's How to Learn Any Language and implement some of the suggestions there? Some of them will obviously not apply to Ancient Greek (i.e. there's currently no Koine TV channel, etc), but many ...

Daniel Streett
Greetings, forumites! Although I followed B-Greek for the past 10 years when it was a mailing list, I'm just now getting around to joining the forum. I teach Greek and New Testament at Criswell College in Dallas, Texas, where I have taught since 2003 (2 years as an adjunct; I'm now in my 7th year of...

Re: Daniel Streett's New Blog
Thanks, Mike, for noting my blog's παρουσία. As for monolingual dictionaries, nothing satisfactory exists right now as far as I'm aware, which perhaps shows how far we have to go. As a historical precedent, however, readers might be interested in checking out Hesychius's 5th century lexicon, which i...
