Re: The Son of Him
If you had worked through a primer systematically, you would have had no trouble with this very common construction -- there is nothing exceptional about it. Your comment about the translations indicated that you were looking at one or more interlinear versions rather than real translations. We hav...

Re: The Son of Him
As Barry has noted, the construction of τοῦ υἱοῦ αὐτοῦ is standard idiomatic Greek; in fact, it is so common that most students who learn Greek in a classroom have encountered it repeatedly well before they've finished one semester's work. And as Jonathan Boyd has noted, it is not true that "m...

The Son of Him
in 1 John 1:7 we read ἐὰν δὲ ἐν τῷ φωτὶ περιπατῶμεν, ὡς αὐτός ἐστιν ἐν τῷ φωτί, κοινωνίαν ἔχομεν μετ' ἀλλήλων καὶ τὸ αἷμα Ἰησοῦ τοῦ υἱοῦ αὐτοῦ καθαρίζει ἡμᾶς ἀπὸ πάσης ἁμαρτίας Most translations say "the Son of Him" why didn't John write τὸ αἷμα τοῦ Ἰησοῦ ? Is there a special significance ...

Re: Translation in Romans 1:4
The exegetical question would be whether Romans 1:4 is concerning the Christ or His Position. Sorry John, I didn't have any exegetical position in mind when reading the verse. I was surprised that ἐν δυνάμει was glossed in a way that seemed to make it adjectival. I took it as either instrumental or...

Re: Translation in Romans 1:4
John: If I read you correctly, you seem to be rejecting BDAG's understanding of the significance of "power" in this verse. I think that for the most part I do disagree with the BDAG. I am not a scholar by any means as many will attest here at B Greek but I do believe that Jesus was declar...

Re: Translation in Romans 1:4
By the way, my inclination is to read all three prepositional phrases with the participle ὁρισθέντος rather than the noun phrase υἱοῦ θεοῦ. Interesting reply. I need to ask, "Do you of any translations that would disagree with your position on the three prepositions in verse 4"? John, In ...

Re: Translation in Romans 1:4
As I mentioned in another thread, I don't think that asking whether a reading is "possible" is very helpful. After all, it is "possible" that "Ich bin ein berliner," means "I am a jelly doughnut," but no one really thinks that President Kennedy announced to w...

Re: More flashcards?
One of the tools that has helped me is found here. http://faculty.gordon.edu/hu/bi/Ted_Hildebrandt/New_Testament_Greek/00-GreekAudioPage.htm The segment on 1 John is very helpful as it gives the Greek and the English. Also I listen to the New Testament in Koine as I travel in my car everyday. I have...

Re: Convertible propositions (John 1:4)
Maybe we should review several different examples of subject and predicate propositions to see if a pattern emerges. What happens when neither the S or PN have the definite article? Can that be convertible as well? John Well, the short answer to that is yes... I thought that would be the case...
