Re: Logged out every time

With the caveat that I'm far from an expert on cookies... A quick look at my Cookie cache shows that although I have only ever used the "www.ibiblio.org" domain, the site is setting cookies for "www-test.ibiblio.org" Looking at the page in code view shows that the java script for...

Morphology of ἐρωτάω: 1st & 2nd pl. Imp. Ind. Act.

When I'm a bit uncertain of Greek forms, I normally plug them into the Perseus Greek Word Study Tool <http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/morph?l=&la=greek>. I've just done this with what I believe to be the 1st & 2nd Plural Imperfect Indicative Active of (ἐπ)ερωταω and gotten the response &...

Re: Zosimus, Historia Nova 3.3.5. "εἰς αὐτοὺς"

Thanks Carl,

I must say I got a good laugh out of this.

Clearly I'm in that zone where my Greek is good enough to parse terms with some accuracy, but not good enough to render me confident in my own analysis.

Ah, the joys of learning...

Re: Zosimus, Historia Nova 3.3.5. "εἰς αὐτοὺς"

Sorry all, but having gone over it time and again, I have to ask a follow-up question: ἐκδεδώκασι is a perfect pcple No matter how I come at this, I'm seeing ἐκδεδώκασι as a perfect active indicative, third person plural. For the perfect participle I would expected ἐκδεδώκοσι but clearly I'm missing...

Re: Zosimus, Historia Nova 3.3.5. "εἰς αὐτοὺς"

Thanks to everybody who replied, esp. Alex Hopkins who appears to have nailed it. Just on Carl's two questions, I can only apologize for posting in the wrong place - I'll take a little more care next time. On the second, I think I did an intro back in the days when B-Greek was an e-mail list, but I ...

Re: Zosimus, Historia Nova 3.3.5. "εἰς αὐτοὺς"

Thanks Stephen, I'm very glad I'm not the only one who finds the syntax difficult, and I'd certainly like to hear Carl's views. Only one comment for now: The stumbling block seems to be τό γε ἧκον εἰς αὐτοὺς. We're looking at a perfect participle of ἥκω, "to have come", and when used with ...

Zosimus, Historia Nova 3.3.5. "εἰς αὐτοὺς"

I'd just like to check that I'm getting the sense of "εἰς αὐτοὺς" (eis autous) correct in the following short snippet from Zosimus, Historia Nova 3.3.5: εἰκότως τοίνυν ὁ καῖσαρ ἀχθόμενος ἐφ’ οἷς τό γε ἧκον εἰς αὐτοὺς ἐκδεδώκασι τοῖς βαρβάροις τοὺς ὁμοφύλους eikotōs toinun ho kaisar echthom...

Adding Greek/Latin lexical aids to Firefox

Hi Folks, Something of which you may not be aware... Firefox users (I have no idea about other browsers) are able to customize their browser with the addition of dedicated search engine plug ins (available here: http://mycroft.mozdev.org/ ). Basically, these supplement the standard Google (or whatev...

Re: Use of vocative (pater) in the Nicene Creed

My apologies, folks. I was so puzzled by this that I eventually went to one of the critical works on the creeds in the hope of finding an answer. Turns out it was a typographical error in my copy of the creed and the term in question actually is an accusative! Thanks anyway, Murray Hogg Melbourne, A...

Use of vocative (pater) in the Nicene Creed

From the first line of the Nicene Creed: pisteuomen en hena theon, pater pantokratora Πιστεύομεν εἰς ἕνα θεὸν, πατέρ παντοκράτορα I would have expected accusative patera (πατέρα) here, but find a vocative instead. I scoured my available grammars for some clue as to what might be happening here, but ...
