Re: Dickey, Composition: Ch 2, Preliminary Exercises

Alright, I'll start this one off. Here are preliminary exercises 1 and 2. I left out the ones that the answer key covers. Preliminary Exercise 1 j. the young women in the marketplace (dat. 2 ways) * ταῖς νέαις ταῖς ἐν ἀγορᾷ * ταῖς ἐν ἀγορᾷ νέαις k. slaves of the young men (nom) * δοῦλοι οἱ τῶν νέων ...

Re: Dickey, Composition: Ch 1, Analysis

What is the purpose of the ὅτι in the phrase ὅπως ὅτι ἀπαρασκευότατον λάβοι βασιλέα ? Wouldn't it be exactly the same without it ( ὅπως [...] ἀπαρασκευότατον λάβοι βασιλέα )? Steadman's reader, Mather and Hewitt's commentary, and Crosby's Lexicon on the Anabasis all say that ὅτι + superlative mean ...

Re: Group Working Through Dickey's Greek Composition

Alrighty. Starting chapter 2! We can extend the next chapter to 3 weeks if people aren't caught up enough.

[Dickey] Ch 2: Preliminary Exercises

See this thread for general info and discussion about what we're doing here . It has been two weeks, so it's about time to start chapter 2. If you aren't quite ready to move on yet, don't rush yourself. We can always extend this chapter into three weeks if people need time to catch up. We can wait ...

[Dickey] Ch 1: Analysis

Behold, a nauseatingly literal translation! 1. From Darius and Parysatis came two children, the older one Artaxerxes (a), the younger one Cyrus (b). When Darius was growing weak and was anticipating the end of his (c) life, he wanted both (d) his two sons present. - a. Ἀρταξέρξης: no article because...

Re: Question about Dickey's Composition - Analysis

As for what you did, that's very nice and laid out well. But I'm hoping we can figure out a decent format that will lend itself to plain text and posting in text boxes on forums. I would like to avoid breaking out a word processor and making a bunch of screenshots.

Re: Question about Dickey's Composition - Analysis

I don't see where she recommends using that form of analysis before chapter 6. After that the chapters often (always?) say "analyze according to the model given in chapter VI". So I say we just wait till then. Up to that point, I would rather just focus on the instructions in the chapter, and focus ...

Re: Dickey, Composition: Ch 1, Sentences

So there's one more example of sentences 31-35... 31. Some learn courage by being educated, but others learn shameful things. οἱ μὲν τὴν ἀνδρείαν τῷ παιδεύεσθαι μανθάνουσιν, οἱ δὲ τὰ αἰσχρά. 32. The good man wishes to find the messenger, but he is eating with the young men. ὁ ἀγαθὸς τὸν ἄγγελον εὐρί...

Re: Dickey, Composition: Ch 1, Preliminary Exercises A & B

I'm glad that you mentioned giving it two weeks before moving on to the next one. I really hope that it will arrive by the beginning of next week and that I'll be with you from then on with the book. I have Amazon Prime, but I don't live in the United States! We definitely won't leave you behind!
