Re: Introduction

For reading environments, I also like http://biblewebapp.com. You can set it up to read Greek alone, or parallel to various translations. Clicking on a Greek word brings up parse information, and often highlights the associate phrase in the parallel passages.

Re: Guinea pigs

...Rereading [a familiar text] is not the best or fastest or fullest way into reading ... within a truly [new target language] network. Yep, I agree learners need to develop a new network for their target language. But I disagree that it's entirely new. Each new language is not learned in a vaccuum...

Re: Guinea pigs

As to reading texts. I think that there is much too much background echo for most students of NT texts. That is, they are hearing/thinking of the understanding of a NT text from prior knowledge rather than the Greek network itself and the new network is only slowly and imperfectly built if the stud...

Re: Teaching lookalikes for a passage

Some exercises that might help teaching lookalikes: Gamify some very simple worksheets that emphasize discrimination of the forms. (How fast can you complete this worksheet, with no mistakes?) Worksheet A: Which of these words is not like the others? εἰ εἰ εἶ εἰ ὁ ὅ ὅ ὅ Worksheet B: Circle the match...

Re: Telling Students Vocabulary Coverage Statistics

The context of those vocabulary stats (both why I calculated them in the first place and how I talk about them in presentations) is largely to point out (to teachers, not students) how much can be improved by not *just* considering frequency of lexeme. Yes, I did rather rip your stats out of contex...

Telling Students Vocabulary Coverage Statistics

I'd love to hear perspectives from both teachers and from students: Is it helpful to students for instructors to share statistics about how much of the New Testament they can read after they've learned X vocabulary items? This post inspired by reflecting on James Tauber's post from a couple months a...

Re: Teaching lookalikes for a passage

Mounce's Basics of Biblical Greek has a look-alike list in the appendices. I don't have it handy at the moment, but it might contain a few more. I've gotten bit a few times by accents that don't match the 'normalized form' (e.g. when τις gets accented because of sentence context), so it might be use...
