Re: Translation of Phil. 3.16

I'll probably sign off of this discussion after this, as I'm a bit confused what you are actually trying to assert at this point. Even your German translation is treating the syntax of Phil. 3.16 as different from the examples you pull from TLG where φθάνω + infinitive is "idiomatic" (the fact that ...

Re: Translation of Phil. 3.16

Peter, I see a couple issues in your line of thinking that need to be addressed. 1. your example Greek sentences are different syntactically from Phil. 3.16. It is important to notice that, syntactically, the examples you have pulled from TLG are all different from the syntax we have in Phil. 3.16. ...

Re: Translation of Phil. 3.16

Regarding the imperitival infinitive, I would also note that Mandilaras, The Verb in the Greek Non-Literary Papyri , has the following to say: In papyri (less so in the N.T.) the imperitival infinitive is well attested. It occurs frequently in official documents, edicts, and regulations, and is also...

Re: In Acts 5:3, what is the function of σε?

Siebenthal is in German, but it is being translated, I hope the translation is good. The translation is finished. Here is the English version: https://www.amazon.com/Ancient-Greek-Grammar-Study-Testament/dp/1789975867 . According to the preface, it is basically a slightly-edited and slightly-expand...

Re: Help finding Ernest Burton's citation in Commentary on Galatians - (see Th. εἰ, III 8 c β...)

Here it is: 2385. Ἰάκωβος; Iakōbos, Iakōbou, ho (see the preceding word (and cf. Buttmann, 6, 18 (16))), James; 1. son of Zebedee, an apostle, and brother of the apostle John (commonly called James the greater or elder). He was slain with the sword by the command of king Herod Agrippa I. (circa A. D...

Re: Typing Tutor for Ancient Greek

All that said, it makes me wonder whether that's why these tools aren't common. I suspect that for the most part they are just not that popular a way to learn to type fluently. Maybe people prefer to just bash away at it until it's good enough. And maybe I'll just do that too. I suspect tools like ...

Re: Typing Tutor for Ancient Greek

If I might make a humble suggestion. You really don't need a typing tutor for teaching how to type with a polytonic keyboard. That fact that you know how to use a keyboard makes you eminently qualified. Just print off the keyboard layout for whatever one of the myriad of polytonic Greek keyboard lay...

Re: Help finding Ernest Burton's citation in Commentary on Galatians - (see Th. εἰ, III 8 c β...)

The abbreviations table at the beginning gives the following work for the abbreviation Th.: Thayer, Joseph Henry, A Greek English Lexicon of the New Testament , New York, 1886. Rev. edition 1889. The text of that section is as follows (unfortunately, all written with transliterations): 8. ei mē, a. ...

Re: Theophylact of Ohrid: Heb. 6:20 πρόδρομος ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν

What exactly is at stake? It seems like the point of debate is whether 1) the passage is emphasizing Jesus' entrance εἰς τὸ ἐσώτερον τοῦ καταπετάσματος as a priestly act where he brings sacrifice "on our behalf" in the holy place, versus 2) emphasizing that Jesus is a forerunner ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν stressing...

Re: Infinitives in Luke 3:21-22

Barry wrote: 1) Luke uses the Semitic/LXX idiom ἐγένετο to introduce the subsequent action. This construction is normally followed by complementary (subjective) infinitives, or you could look at it as a form of indirect statement. Either way the infinitives would be dependent on ἐγένετο. This is by...
