Re: The Meaning of the Phrase ἐπ᾽ ἐσχάτου τῶν ἡμερῶν τούτων at Heb 1:2

Thank you for the quotation. Contrast what is stated in some other commentaries: “In these last times (ἐπʼ ἐσχάτου τῶν ἡμερῶν τούτων). Lit. at the last of these days. The exact phrase only here; but comp. 1 Pet. 5:20 and Jude 18. LXX, ἐπʼ ἐσχάτου τῶπ ἡμερῶν at the last of the days, Num. 24:14; Deut....

The Meaning of the Phrase ἐπ᾽ ἐσχάτου τῶν ἡμερῶν τούτων at Heb 1:2

Heb 1:1, 2: “Πολυμερῶς καὶ πολυτρόπως πάλαι ὁ θεὸς λαλήσας τοῖς πατράσιν ἐν τοῖς προφήταις ἐπ᾽ ἐσχάτου τῶν ἡμερῶν τούτων ἐλάλησεν ἡμῖν ἐν υἱῷ, ὃν ἔθηκεν κληρονόμον πάντων, δι᾽ οὗ καὶ ἐποίησεν τοὺς αἰῶνας·” A lot of Bible translations render the Greek phrase ἐπ᾽ ἐσχάτου τῶν ἡμερῶν τούτων with such ph...

Re: Translation of the Phrase “οὕτω τοίνυν, ὡς εἴρηται”

If the words “οὕτω τοίνυν, ὡς εἴρηται” are omitted from the Greek text, will the following translation be correct? “He says that the destruction of the wicked will take place like it did for those who lived at the time of the flood, since the message of the gospel had been driven out due to their ap...

Translation of the Phrase “οὕτω τοίνυν, ὡς εἴρηται”

Commentary on the Gospel of Luke attributed to Eusebius, extract from section “And just as happened in the days of Noah” (Lu 17:26): “Οὕτω τοίνυν, ὡς εἴρηται, ἐκβληθέντος διὰ τὴν ἀποστασίαν τοῦ λόγου τοῦ εὐαγγελικοῦ, κατὰ τὴν ὁμοίωσιν τῶν ἐπὶ τοῦ κατακλυσμοῦ συμβεβηκότων, ὁ κατὰ τῶν ἀσεβῶν ὄλεθρος ἐ...

Re: Meaning and Translation of the Word ὑπάρχειν

Thank you for the explanation. I had thought that the phrase καιρὸν τῆς συντελείας ὑπάρχειν may correspond word-for-word to the English phrase “time of the end of the age.” But the word “age” apparently does not appear in the original text but has been added by the English translator. This is how th...

Meaning and Translation of the Word ὑπάρχειν

Commentary on the Gospel of Luke attributed to Eusebius, extract from section “Take care that your hearts are not weighed down in drunkenness” (Lu 21:34): “Νήφειν τε καὶ ἐγρηγορέναι παρακελεύεται, καὶ ἀγρυπνεῖν διὰ πάσης τῆς τοῦ θνητοῦ βίου νυκτὸς, διὰ τὸ μηδενὶ γνώριμον τὸν καιρὸν τῆς συντελείας ὑπ...

Finding an English Translation of Fragmenta in Evangelium Joannis (in Catenis)

The database Thesaurus Linguae Graecae has the following two texts attributed to Origen: Commentarii in evangelium Joannis (lib. 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 10, 13, 19-20, 28-32) Fragmenta in evangelium Joannis (in catenis) There is a partial translation of the first text in Philip Schaff’s Ante-Nicene Fathers, ...

Re: Finding English Translation of De cruce et latrone homilia 1

Thank you. I visit the website when I am looking for translations of Chrysostom’s writings. In rare instances, some persons may make translations which are not published and therefore not listed.

Finding English Translation of De cruce et latrone homilia 1

A 50-word proximity search for the words παρουσία and ἔρχομαι in Thesaurus Linguae Graecae yields many results, and one of the works which are referenced is De cruce et latrone homilia 1 (“1st Homily on the Cross and the Thief”) attributed to John Chrysostom, which has 16 instances where the words π...

Re: Linking the Words Συντέλεια and Πέρας With the English Translation

Thank you for the clarifications. I can conclude that the English words can be linked with the Greek text in the following way: “Is not the end [πέρας] of his own life the consummation [συντέλεια] to every individual?” (Οὐχὶ ἑκάστῳ ἡ συντέλεια τὸ τῆς αὐτοῦ ζωῆς πέρας ἐστί.) Having reviewed Lampe, BD...
