Greek Language of the Early Christian Writings

Hello,

The Koine Greek language is said to have been spoken up until the 4th century. I would like to know whether the church fathers wrote in the Koine Greek language of the Bible. Are the Greek words in their writings used with exactly the same sense in which they are used in the Bible?

Re: Finding Translations of Texts From Patrologia Graeca

Thank you for the information. I had previously visited those links when searching for English translations. Other series available for free appear to be less comprehensive than Schaff’s series. It may be helpful to search for translations of specific works separately.

Finding Translations of Texts From Patrologia Graeca

J. P. Migne's 161-volume Patrologia Graeca has a lot of Greek texts from early Christian writings. When working with some searchable texts from Patrologia Graeca on TLG ( Thesaurus Linguae Graecae) , I cannot find their English translations in Philip Schaff’s 38-volume series The Ante Nicene Fathers...

Re: Obtaining Translations of Texts in Thesaurus Linguae Graecae

I have tried to use ugarit.ialigner.com to automatically align a Greek excerpt (copied from TLG) with a long English translation to find the rendering of that excerpt in the English translation. The website says that access is denied. There is no help page explaining how to use the alignment program...

Re: Obtaining Translations of Texts in Thesaurus Linguae Graecae

Thank you. Older translations are often less accurate than the newer. I find it helpful when a translation is not too paraphrastic and is literal enough (as are many translations from the Loeb Classical Library), since it is easier to match it to the Greek text.

Re: Obtaining Translations of Texts in Thesaurus Linguae Graecae

It is easier to make translations oneself nowadays, since the TLG and Perseus databases link Greek words to lexicons. But because I cannot produce translations which are accurate enough, I will have to skip Greek texts for which it is difficult to find translations in the electronic format. The Ante...

Re: Obtaining Translations of Texts in Thesaurus Linguae Graecae

Bruce Robertson's Lace has a lot of these texts OCR'd, with fairly high quality. There are a lot of Greek texts on the website, but I cannot see English translations. What I am looking for are English translations of works in TLG which are not found in the Perseus and Loeb Digital Classical Library...

Re: Obtaining Translations of Texts in Thesaurus Linguae Graecae

Sometimes you can guess that - one hint: if you want to have a translation of a certain passage of a Greek text - try to google in Google Books for the author and type in a marked expression around the passage you want to have as translation, e.g. yesterday I wanted to read a translation of a unkno...

Re: Obtaining Translations of Texts in Thesaurus Linguae Graecae

Thank you for the information. I am doing searches for certain words in Greek texts to see where they are used synonymously or interchangeably. When I was working with texts in the Perseus database, I did a lot of searches for translations on the Internet before I gained access to the Loeb Digital C...

Obtaining Translations of Texts in Thesaurus Linguae Graecae

Hello, Thesaurus Linguae Graecae does not provide English translations of the texts contained in the database. My research is based to a considerable extent on finding English translations of the instances where certain Greek words are used. Can you suggest how to find English translations of the Gr...
