Re: What book next?

Thanks Barry, good to hear a second voice confirming what Stirling has suggested. I will add Thessalonians onto my list to start after Acts then Whilst I may have grumbled about the vocab - I am not averse to learning it. I hope to eventually reach a competency with vocab and grammar where I can rea...

Re: What book next?

Thanks for the suggestion Stirling. I think I have the Culy-Parsons handbook on paper at home so I will hunt that out and see what I can make of it. Re the vocab, I don’t like relying on lists anyway - was just hoping for something that wouldn’t give me AS much as Luke did! I use Olivetree on my mob...

What book next?

I am just coming to he end of a read through Luke where I have had to battle to learn over 500 new words and am wondering what people would suggest to read next. I have already read mark, John, Romans, 1 Corinthians, part of 2 Corinthians before I admitted defeat), the johannine epistles. Ideally it...

Re: Καὶ ἦν διδάσκων τὸ καθʼ ἡμέραν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ

Needless to say, the places without outnumber those with more than 4:1, plus is peculiar to the Lucian corpus :) That is of course if you don't take the apostolic fathers into account. Although, to be fair I only found one example there Ad Autol. iii. 30. Ἔτι μὴν καὶ τοὺς σεβομένους αὐτὸν ἐδίωξαν κ...

Re: Καὶ ἦν διδάσκων τὸ καθʼ ἡμέραν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ

Thanks both for the replies A previous reply failed to post for some reason, but thanks for doing the work for me in finding the examples. I got round to logging into Logos and doing the search but you had beaten me to it. So the question then is 1. Whether there is a fundamental rule that governs t...

Re: Καὶ ἦν διδάσκων τὸ καθʼ ἡμέραν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ

Hi Stirling, I may be slanted towards the SFL approach as I am taking SFL sessions with someone. Also, I am in the Porter camp on the question of verbal aspect, although more tentatively now than in the past Each of your examples use the article, are you arguing that it is therefore not meaningful? ...

Thanks for the reply.
I am reticent to ascribe meaninglessness to something where an author had a choice to use it or not. Not sure whether the mantra of choice=meaning is a valid one, but the author here has used a more complex phrase than he needed to if it were simply meaningless.

Re: Καὶ ἦν διδάσκων τὸ καθʼ ἡμέραν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ

To make it clearer, could there be an implied αυτο that the article is referring to? This would then mean he was teaching the purity of the temple daily

Καὶ ἦν διδάσκων τὸ καθʼ ἡμέραν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ

I am slightly puzzled by the usage of the article before the prepositional phrase in Luke 19:47. I understand that one use may be to substantivize/nominalise the prepositional phrase. Does this therefore make the teaching being referred to something more concrete/consistent than omitting the article...

Re: Metaphorical extensions of spatial concepts

Fair point on the completely, I overstated there. However, eating up could refer to the act of bringing the food up to your mouth? At this point just shooting in the dark so had better not go any further
