Re: Pastor and student

Welcome to the forums! How far into Mark are you? I'd love to see your sermons. I figure anyone who went through The Master's appreciates the value of expository sermons. I'm working through Mark right now as a series of Sunday school lessons/sermons (not sure how I'll give them). I'm in chapter 2, ...

Re: Rendering imperfective into English (an English question?)

Possibly another argument against the inceptive imperfect would be that when writers wanted to emphasize the beginning of the action, they had other more obvious ways to do so. Mark 2:23. καὶ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ἤρξαντο ὁδὸν ποιεῖν τίλλοντες τοὺς στάχυας. ἤρξαντο plus an infinitive is a common phrase i...

Garrett Tyson intro

Hi all, I'm a graduate of Bethel Seminary, where I learned just enough Greek for it to be almost useful. My story is a complicated one, but the end result is this: I drive for UPS, and I teach Sunday school and do occasional pulpit supply. As far as the Greek part of that goes, I've learned and lost...

Re: Rendering imperfective into English (an English question?)

Some grammars talk about different types of imperfects (conative, inceptive, etc.), but as I've been working through Mark, I'm finding Rodney Decker's approach (Temporal Deixis) to be working beautifully. Imperfects are background information to help us understand the story line better. They are ong...
