Re: Illustrating Semantic Range

Suppose I don't speak English, and I encounter this text: The captain can run the ship with a run in her stocking while her crew members run a race on the run on deck 10. If I'm struggling with the words, it's easy enough to think "run in her stocking" may refer to a physical activity done while wea...

Re: Does pronunciation matter? If so, why?

Once you start speaking Greek and hearing it spoken, you want to get on board with others who are speaking it, and like human nature, you become what you surround yourself with. I often do read texts to myself out loud, I find that very helpful. I have occasionally listened to texts, not nearly eno...

Re: What software doesn't do ....

When I work with a text, I like to have the text up front and center. I'd like to be able to add notes to the text, do searches and incorporate the results, etc. In other words, I'd like a good word processor for Greek texts, extended with the tools typically found in Bible software. I'd also like t...

Re: Working Papers in Greek Language & Linguistics

For projects in this forum, I don't think it matters so much where the results are published, as long as they are published on the Internet somewhere, for free, with appropriate intellectual property rights (e.g. a Creative Commons license). I suspect we'd be happy to have any forum that meets those...

The dwindling group of proficient ancient Greek readers

In a recent private email, Carl said this (quoted with permission, as required on B-Greek): THIS IS RIGHT AT THE CORE OF THE PROBLEM, I THINK. We have a dwindling group -- 100-200-300?+ people who are really proficient in ancient Greek in the world. I have no idea what the actual number might be. Bu...

Re: Working Papers in Greek Language & Linguistics

This would be very interesting. And if B-Greek can help here, let us know how.

What software doesn't do ....

Are there things you think software should do well, that aren't done well by any Bible study software you've used? If so, what?

Which Bible Study Software?

What Bible Study software do you use? I once used Gramcord extensively, but I haven't been able to use it since I switched to Linux. And I've been missing it ever since. It's been a long time - is Gramcord still widely used? I currently do morphological searches the hard way, using XQuery and a morp...

Does pronunciation matter? If so, why?

Does it really matter which pronunciation someone uses, as long as they have some intelligible way to pronounce Greek? If so, why? Would it be wrong to simply adopt modern Greek pronunciation, since that's the community most likely to actually speak Greek these days? And the one you are most likely ...
