Relationship between eklegw and eklegomai

My brain is stuck on this. The specific ref is Jn 15:16, You did not choose Me but I chose you. BDAG lists the verb as eklegomai, but the NASB concordance (keyed to Strong's #1586) lists eklegw. What is the relationship between the two? And if I am commenting on Jn 15:16, in a Bible study for instan...

Re: Verb help

You got it, Jonathon. Sometimes the hardest part is just figuring out the "category."

Re: Verb help

I don't see why the verb cannot be understood to refer to present time. In Matt 13:37, Jesus states a present fact, which is that "the son of man is the one who sows good seed". It is not a fact of the past, therefore "ην" is not used. In Revelation, which is supposed to be a revelation of many thi...

Re: Verb help

Hmm...You'll probably find it in Wallace under Convertible Propositions. Thank you. Yes, it appears Wallace addresses similar constructions starting on p. 41, which he calls "convertible propositions." But it does seem that the label "Interpretive Present" better categorizes what I was specifically...

Re: Verb help

OK, whaddya know, I did a search on the Matthew 13:37 reference and got a hit: http://faculty.gordon.edu/hu/bi/Ted_Hildebrandt/New_Testament_Greek/Text/Battle-PresentTense/Battle-PresentTense.htm On page 72, it looks like he calls what I'm talking about the "Interpretive Present." Is anyone familiar...

Re: Verb help

Sorry for the confustion, I'm having difficulty framing the question properly. Although the examples I gave are in the present indicative, they aren't time-specific. I've noticed this in several places in the NT. Here's another example that hopefully might better illustrate, Rev. 17:18 "The woman . ...

Verb help

I can't seem to identify a certain usage of estin / eisin , can't find it in Wallace, etc. A couple quick examples I've found would be Matt. 13:37 "The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man"; and Rev. 1:20 "the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the...

Re: Deponent Verb in 2 Thess. 2:10

Carl, I assure you my motive for posting was grammar based, not theological. I do not consider this a theology forum. What I meant was that my initial theological interest led me to seek clarification re. the grammar. Please consider any future questions I may have to be motivated by a desire to bet...

Re: Deponent Verb in 2 Thess. 2:10

Thanks, Carl. I realize there are limits to what we can infer from the grammar itself. My original line of thought was that it is middle, indicating some sense of self-interest, and also, based on dechomai in this context indicating "approval or conviction by accepting" (BDAG), I postulated that the...

Apologies regarding my username, I missed reading the requirement that actual names be used. I've requested that my username be changed to WAnderson. Carl, thank you for the link, I'll check it out. I'm finding this information helpful, but a further question arises specifically on the intent of the...
