Re: Septuagint translation of Daniel 11:35

You are most welcome, William! And congrats on venturing into reading the Septuagint. Many students of Koine never take the plunge, just stick with the NT. I think they're missing out on some great reading in Greek. (That doesn't mean the Greek itself is always great, mind. But, it's still worth rea...

Re: Septuagint translation of Daniel 11:35

WStroupe: (Could we have a first name?) Thanks for taking this correction of mine in the right spirit. As it happens, I agree with you about the divine inspiration of Matthew. And of Jesus. However, here we have to deal with linguistic questions, especially Greek ones, with theology taking a seat in...

Re: Χριστός (Christ) in Septuagint and Sanskrit?

Jonathan,

Many thanks for the file on the usage of χριστός in the LXX! I've only done a partial study of that, so it will come in handy when I return to it. I downloaded it today.

Re: Septuagint translation of Daniel 11:35

WSTroupe, I don't think we can appeal to Jesus himself making a distinction between the words συντέλεια and τέλος, because he was speaking to a local (partly, at least) Jewish audience, including his apostles, in Jerusalem. Therefore, he likely was speaking in Hebrew or Aramaic, not Greek. If there ...

Re: Barry Hofstetter

Thanks for sharing Barry’s obituary, so we could learn more about his remarkable life. Although I didn’t have the pleasure of knowing Barry personally, I feel that I have lost a friend. Both in reading his B-Greek posts, his Textkit posts, and his B-Latin posts (first when it was a mailing list, and...

Re: Restored Koine Pronunciation - Web resources for learners

Hi Jared,

Which particular pdf?

As for β, during the Koine period (approximately 300 B.C.-A.D. 300), it was pronounced like /v/ in English "victor", "vote", etc. Thus, in Modern Greek, which carries forward much of the same pronunciation, the name of the letter β is /veeta/.

My pleasure. Welcome to the forum, and feel free to ask more questions. There is such a thing as a stupid answer; not so with questions if the person asking truly wants to learn.

We look forward to hearing how your learning progresses.

Re: Finding the Stem of a Word

LearningGreek asked, Specifically, in part 1, when you have the -(suffix) as opposed to (suffix), what is that indicating? The "-(suffix)" means the same thing as (suffix), seems to me. The hyphen is just a visual marker to set off or distinguish the suffix from the rest of the word, makin...

Hi LearningGreek,

I will be responding to your question about using Greenlee's book, probably later this week. Meanwhile, any forum member who wants to assist with that, feel free to join in.
