Re: Word Order in Matt 21:33
Another possibility is that it simply sounded to the writer like the right way to do it, and he gave much less thought to it than the attention we are paying to it. I think discourse analysis is good and helpful, but I also think we sometimes overthink it.

Re: Passive verbs in Romans 10:10
In other words, the subject is not expressed for the same reason we sometimes use "they" in English, as in "You know what they say..." It's considered a generic or universal reference. The middle expresses a certain self-affectedness for the subject, something which we usually im...

Re: Question about contract verbs (first principal part)
Thanks. Is this the case with the "lexical" form of all, most, or just some contract verbs? As with most bold generalizations about a language, "never" is too strong a word: you will see uncontracted forms of verbs in Ionic dialect -- if you ever have occasion to read a text com...

Re: How many English words in a dictionary?
All of them? How many English words do you need to know to use a lexicon that gives definitions in English? The lexicons and dictionaries that we use are written for English speaking readers of Greek, and so guys like Arndt and Gingrich (Newt's uncle, BTW... ) expected users of their lexicons...

Re: A silly question: Ἐγὼ φωνὴ βοῶντος ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ
Ἐγὼ φωνὴ βοῶντος ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ Can both βοάω and βοόω take the form βοῶντος? Would the morphology permit a silly reader to think this means "I am a voice turning into an ox in the wilderness"? That is a silly question!! The answer is: No. The gen. sg. pres. act .ptc. of βοοῦν (βοόω if you p...

Re: 1 Peter 4:12 πρὸς πειρασμὸν ὑμῖν γινομένῃ
Hi Barry, Thanks for your commentary. Regarding your analysis of the grammar of 1Peter 4:12 (μὴ ξενίζεσθε τῇ ἐν ὑμῖν πυρώσει πρὸς πειρασμὸν ὑμῖν γινομένῃ): If you were to make a "wooden" translation to illustrate your point -- "the dative makes perfect sense here as an indirect objec...

Re: 1 Peter 4:12 πρὸς πειρασμὸν ὑμῖν γινομένῃ
Rebardless of the previous discussion, let me observe here that the dative makes perfect sense here as an indirect object with γινομένῃ, and makes little sense as a dative of possession with πειρασμόν (which is syntactically impossible or at the least extremely difficult). The parallel mentioned abo...

Re: How good is your Greek based on ancient texts?
This was, BTW, how the professor for my Greek Prose Composition course in grad school ran the course. He gave us texts in translation from original authors which we then retroverted. It was valuable on several levels, not the least of which was a good lesson in what Carl observed, that there are man...

Re: Blessed by the Spirit
Do these rules also apply for using ἐν for instrumental dative? i.e. Colossians 1:8 might be relevant to consider as well? When I first read this passage in greek I read it as "by the spirit". καθὼς ἐμάθετε ἀπὸ Ἐπαφρᾶ τοῦ ἀγαπητοῦ συνδούλου ἡμῶν, ὅς ἐστιν πιστὸς ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν διάκονος τοῦ Χρι...
