Re: Conditional in Joh 18,36

May I add one more 'split'... In the electronic German version that I have, John 18:36, reads, '... so hätten meine Diener gekämpft...' I believe that in Matthew 24:43 a general situation is described, i.e. 'when this occurs (in general)... that is to be expected', whereas in John 18:36, we have a c...

Re: Conditional in Joh 18,36

... It's a present counterfactual condition. It makes perfect sense in English; however, there are languages (Romanian, at least) where the use of present in translation would induce some strange idea about the sequence of the related events: the reader would expect that the servants Jesus makes re...

Re: Galatians 1:6-10

I have seleced some instances where ἄλλος, -η, -ον may mean 'diferent' instead of 'another'; in other words, 'an altered … something'. Mt 2:12 καὶ χρηματισθέντες κατ’ ὄναρ μὴ ἀνακάμψαι πρὸς Ἡρῴδην, δι’ ἄλλης ὁδοῦ ἀνεχώρησαν εἰς τὴν χώραν αὐτῶν. Comment: the ἄλλης ὁδοῦ should not mean 'another' in th...

Re: James 2:18: my works, my faith, or both?

I feel tempted to make a parallel between this subject and the one described in Matt 9:5,6. And if I were to paraphrase that pericope and apply it to this text, I would put it like this: τί ἐστιν εὐκοπώτερον, εἰπεῖν, Πίσπιν ἔχω, ἢ Ἔργα ἔχω; ἵνα δὲ εἰδῆτε ὅτι οὕτω τις λέγων ἐρεῖ, ἐγὼ λέγω, Δείχω σοι ...

Re: Lk.22:2b Fear them, what they would do to them or just d

It seems to me that the τὸ πῶς construction is key to understanding the matter, in that the high priests' and scholars' simply ἀνελεῖν αὐτόν (which they felt they needed to do) would naturally generate a strong and immediate negative reaction of the λαός, so they needed to devise some 'method' (τὸ π...

Re: Heb 2:5-9 in NIV - αὐτόν as "them"

I just said, 'I think'… Why not take it as such?… Indeed, the feeling that I have is that such traslations/translators suppose that my understading ability today is somewhat inferior to that of the people who were the original recepients of such mesagges/texts. I wonder whether they really are quali...

Re: Heb 2:5-9 in NIV - αὐτόν as "them"

... The new 2011 edition of the New International Version reflects an interesting change here, since they understand (and rightly so, I think)... In my culture, I sometimes hear the term 'dogmatic translation', where the translator's care is not to convey the true meaning of the text, but the 'true...

Re: Why not start with modern Greek?

... is there anything to be said for starting with modern Greek, then moving back in time to the Koine period? In theory, this might provide opportunities to get a sound oral foundation in one kind of Greek, then work into applying that to another kind of Greek... It is my conviction that this appr...

Re: Learning the lesser used words...

It is also my opinion that learning words in their own contexts would lead to the best results. Rare words, by their very occurence lesser times, are fit to be leared by memorising the related passages. I could even guess that, learned like that, they would tend to become good 'acquaintances' rather...

Re: Aspectual interpretation of ἐβουλήθη in Matt 1:19?

... Would Romanian not use an imperfect for your example? Of course, the imperfect can be used, but the sense of the statement would be different: With the imperfect, the sense would be something like, '[When the proposition was made for me to attend the party] I was already wanting to do someting ...
