Re: Leacock
If it saves anyone else any time, I'd demure on the judgment of ch 4 as invaluable. The book may be of curious interest, but there's nothing in ch. 4 that's of any particular value, IMHO, for the study of Greek--not even as motivation for proper use. It's more a parody of an incompetent Anglican min...

Re: The Epistemology of Linguistics
Mike's bibliography is likely on target for those working heavily in linguistics (or who want to). But perhaps for those of us lesser beings it might be profitable to suggest some less technical discussion. If nothing else, it might serve as a useful introduction to the subject of linguistics in gen...

Re: Mounce's Biblical Greek: A Compact Guide
Mark asked, What is wrong with speaking artificial Greek? How would that harm one's reading fluency in real Greek.? Is it really better to speak no Greek at all than Greek that is less than perfect? I know most people feel this to be true, but why? My concern in that regard is that people who achiev...

Re: Mounce's Biblical Greek: A Compact Guide
As I've already said, many of Louis' points are well taken. As I've browsed a bit more, however, there are a couple that might need to be re-thought. 3. The numbers δύο, τρεῖς, τεσσαρεις are not given in the number section (there is room - chart on p. 78 under Adjectives) 10. The charts have no glos...

Re: Mounce's Biblical Greek: A Compact Guide
It seems to me that the very notion of a "compact guide" to Biblical Greek is an idea of questionable usefulness . I suspect that its intended purpose is none that you list. My guess is that it is intended as a quick reference guide for students who have forgotten or are unsure about some...

Re: Mounce's Biblical Greek: A Compact Guide
I've gone through Mounce's Biblical Greek: A Compact Guide, I'm very satisfied with the book as a whole - but there are a number of areas where it could be improved for those who are using the book as a simple go-to grammar. Good suggestions, but I think that if Bill implemented all of them it woul...

Re: Unusual word order? Josh 21:34
I just realized the signif of part of your comment Carl. If κυριος is treated as a proper name (= YHWH), then it becomes the subject, though with the pred nom being articular (ὁ θεος) the statement is "convertible." In which case it reads "The Lord is their God"--very normal order.

Unusual word order? Josh 21:34
Here is a statement that I think uses unusual word order. Josh 21:34, κύριος ὁ θεὸς αὐτῶν ἐστιν. This is typically translated "The Lord is their God" (e.g., NETS), but the grammar marks θεός as the subject (i.e., with the article). If that is the case, then it ought to be, I think, "T...

Re: BDAG 2nd Edition v. 3rd Edition
The URL that Jonathan cited for my BDAG review should be updated to http://www.ntresources.com/bdag.html For my two cents, BDAG (i.e. the 3d ed., not BAG, 1st ed., or BAGD, 2d ed.) is worth every penny even if you must pay full list price. My old pages/site are not maintained and haven't been for qu...

Re: Funk BIGHG
I made a sticky post (it will always stay on the top of the messages) about it under Books-Grammars. http://www-test.ibiblio.org/bgreek/forum/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=307 . It's not on the main B-Greek page. We could also post it as a sticky under the Beginner's forum. I've talked with Jonathan abo...
