Best Practices for Second Year Greek
Most discussions of pedagogy on this list deal with approaches to teaching introductory Greek. I am interested in suggestions about best practices for the second year. To get things started, I invite your feedback on the syllabus I used the last time I taught our 3rd semester Greek Syntax course fou...

Re: Vocabulary Cards Incorporating Pictures
Devenios,
Instead of, or in addition to, PowerPoint, may I recommend Anki (http://ankisrs.net/)? It is a powerful flashcard program that supports pictures and audio within flashcards.

Re: Semantic differences between Aorist/Future Middle & Pass
Thanks for your reply, Mike. Let me try to clarify. My question is not primarily concerned with deponency, but with the possibility of meaningful morphological distinctions within the larger subject-focused category. My standard explanation of the Aorist and Future Middle and Passive forms--followin...

Semantic differences between Aorist/Future Middle & Passive?
I was explaining my understanding of Carl Conrad's model of Greek voice* to a friend, who responded with some counter-examples that appear to fit the traditional model better. (*E.g., http://www.artsci.wustl.edu/~cwconrad/docs//AGNT_Newsletter_Q1_2011_002.pdf ; see also Michael Palmer's discussion h...

Best Practices in Vocabulary Acquisition
I should note that the article Louis introduced here ( http://ibiblio.org/bgreek/forum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=1442&start=10&sid=a90d38f5db7b0db1d76263d9189f227d&sid=a90d38f5db7b0db1d76263d9189f227d#p7516 ) supports the traditional method of requiring intermediate students to memorize v...

Re: Vocabulary / Week
Thanks for the helpful suggestions, everyone. Louis, I’ll look forward to the statistics from Graben. A new idea for me coming out of this conversation is to ditch vocab frequency lists in 2nd year classes, and only require students to learn the vocabulary that we actually encounter in readings. To ...

Vocabulary / Week
Can anyone point me to suggestions regarding an optimal # of new vocab words that should be introduced each week in a typical 3 hour / week introductory Greek course? How many words should be introduced in the first year of study? Factors to consider include (1) the amount of vocab one needs to acqu...

Re: Self-paced CD/DVD course?
I would be interested in testimonials from people who have (a) used Living Koine Greek for self-study or (b) used Living Koine Greek as the main textbook for a taught course.RandallButh wrote:'Self-paced CD course' is almost a description of

Re: bibliography management software
I used Library Master for several years, switched to EndNote for its Unicode support, and then to Zotero because it is both free and, in most respects, a superior program.
The freestanding alpha program works fine.

Re: Restored Koine in nontechnical terms
I'll let Randall comment on the details of your chart. (At first glance, the main difference seems to be your rendering of υ and οι as 'oo' in 'book' instead of German ü or 'ew' in 'mew'.) For the sake of comparison, I am uploading a handout I put together a few years ago that attempts to make "...
