Re: J. Gresham Machen "New Testament Greek for Beginners" 2n

I will not let pass an opportunity to bad-mouth Machen's Greek primer for the ad-nauseamth time in this forum. I would ask: Why revise it at all, rather than start over? When I first encountered it half a century ago as a textbook for tutoring a student in Koine, it seemed pretty clear early on tha...

Re: κεφαλή polysemy in head(ship) discussions.

There's been a lot written about this word, mainly due to hugely the important Christological and gender-relations issues occasioned by 1 Cor 11:3. Everybody's got a theory and the stakes are high. My sense is that metaphorical applications of this body part were not particularly common in Greek (i...

Re: Introduction: Aaron Hermann

reading text in the actual language itself is what is going to get you there. Barry, you might be surprised to hear me object to that. Normally, I don't think reading the GNT will get a person to the goal of reading comprehension. I think it is something to advise for the stage when a learner can r...

Re: Introduction: Aaron Hermann

Both Paul and Stirling offer excellent advice. I would simply emphasize that reading grammars makes you good at reading grammars, and reading Greek makes you good at reading Greek. By all means continue reading the grammars -- if nothing else it will help you find things that you might need tor refe...

We do not normally discuss issues of text criticism on B-Greek, only in so far as the variant reading contributes to our understanding of the text.

I'm not sure exactly what your claim is. I'm pretty sure you would not claim that the infinitive always implies ability, so when do you claim that it does? Could you make a more specific claim, something that we can show to be true or false by looking at other sentences? Jonathan! The following are...
