Re: Self Taught Living Koine ?

I am doing the best I can to develop practical fluency in Koine Greek on my own. I am focusing on reading - never translating - Greek. Lot's of it. New Testament, LXX, lot's of Apostolic Fathers. I am also working through some of Buth's materials, namely his Epictetus disc. I recently began incorpor...

Re: Greek: what motivates you?

ὁ λόγος σάρξ ἐγένετο καὶ ἐσκήνωσεν ἐν ἡμῖν ... I cannot express this very clearly, but as I see it, our will to understand ancient Greek -- and other ancient and modern languages as well, in which humanity has archived its shared experience, is ultimately grounded in the incarnation of ὁ λόγος in t...

Re: ἐνεστερνισμένοι

BDAG has this entry with a deponent form of the word as the head term ἐνστερνίζομαι, "to store away within oneself" as the extended definition (bold italic text in BDAG). I didn't see that entry - that's what I get for searching for it instead of just looking it up manually! Thanks folks.

ἐνεστερνισμένοι

1 Clement has the word ἐνεστερνισμένοι which should be the nom pl masc aor mid ptc of ἐνστερνίζω. Problem is, I can't find a definition for ἐνστερνίζω anywhere - at least among the resources I have access to. Checked BDAG, Intermediate Lexicon, and searched Perseus. Anyone happen to know this word?

Re: Putting Good Greek into Bad English

It isn't just oral translation, it's the whole mentality that the purpose of learning Greek is to translate it into English. No intro grammar or (I would assume) 1st year instructor will outright say this, but they will often say that the purpose is "exegesis," which in this case is basica...

Re: "Tools of the Trade"

I don't want to be under the knife of a doctor who Googled his way through medical school, and I don't want a teacher/pastor/author who Accordance-d their way through seminary.

Re: Church Fathers online?

I've posted another online Reader, this time for Ignatius to the Romans: http://www.greekingout.com/new-testament-greek-resources/ignatius-to-the-romans-online-reader/ You can also use this nifty tool by Logos Bible Software's Rick Brannan to look up specific verses in the Apostolic Fathers collecti...

Perfect, thanks - I knew that my reading was not fitting the context, so your reply is very helpful.

Help with a Plutarch translation

Here's the text: ‘ἀλλ᾽ ἔστιν ὁ θεὸς, χρὴ φάναι, καὶ ἔστι κατ᾽ οὐδένα χρόνον ἀλλὰ κατὰ τὸν αἰῶνα τὸν ἀκίνητον καὶ ἄχρονον καὶ ἀνέγκλιτον καὶ οὗ πρότερον οὐδέν ἐστιν οὐδ᾽ ὕστερον I'm specifically drawing a blank with the function of kata in 'κατ᾽ οὐδένα χρόνον ἀλλὰ κατὰ τὸν αἰῶνα τὸν ἀκίνητον.' I'm th...

Re: Reading Philo

Thanks, that's what I'll do then. Philo is high on my list of extra-Biblical authors, but I am not very well read in pre-Koine literature. I'm working to change that over the next few months, and I suppose I'll start with Plato and move on from there. Probably good advice regardless of what I'm plan...
