Re: Learning Greek on one's own

So, the solution? More practice. Again, my pet peeve -- lots of reading, right from the get-go. It's not practical for many learners to follow the kind of program that you recommend, Randall, but if students practice their language and see lots of examples in various context, it goes a long way to ...

Re: Phil 2:6 - aspect

BG-Friends, in Phil 2:6 we read: "hOS EN MORFH QEOU hUPARCWN OUC hARPAGMON hHGHSATO TO EINAI ISA QEW" (Sorry, I can't export the right greek font out of BibleWorks). Phil. 2:6 ὃς ἐν μορφῇ θεοῦ ὑπάρχων οὐχ ἁρπαγμὸν ἡγήσατο τὸ εἶναι ἴσα θεῷ, (from Accordance) I try to understand the combina...

Re: Funk BIGHG

The last thing in the world that I'd want to do is to downplay the value of BIGHG, but I do think that it's worth calling attention to Micheal Palmer's online grammar (http://www.greek-language.com/Hellenistic-Greek.html). It's still not complete, but it has gotten well beyond first-semester lessons...

Re: 2Timothy 2:16

My question is about the prepositional phrase "ἐπὶ πλεῖον.... ἀσεβείας" EPI PLEION.... hASEBEIAS If the noun object of EPI is PLEION isn't Paul using the "wrong" preposition? EPI with an accusative usually emphasizes motion or direction on, upon, to, up to, against - not in or i...

Re: Double Negatives (was John 14:30)

Regarding the spacing of words from their modifiers, what about this from the Anabasis? ἀναβαίνει οὖν ὁ Κῦρος λαβὼν Τισσαφέρνην ὡς φίλον, καὶ τῶν Ἑλλήνων ἔχων ὁπλίτας ἀνέβη τριακοσίους , ἄρχοντα δὲ αὐτῶν Ξενίαν Παρράσιον. (Anabasis 1.1.2) Here we don't have an adverbial or any type of modifier of t...

Re: Nice overview of verb morphology

For what it's worth, I have a compendium of the ancient Greek verb accessible at my own web-site, spelling out in considerably greater detail the matters that I discussed in my response above. Overview of Ancient Greek Verb: http://www.artsci.wustl.edu/~cwconrad/docs/AncientGreekVerb.pdf GNT Irregul...

Re: Nice overview of verb morphology

I found the format of this particular overview useful: http://www.torahresource.com/Greek/Verbs2.pdf The formatting is nice. The execution, however, involves a couple problems: (a) The verb λύειν has no aorist middle ἐλυσάημν κτλ. in NT Koine, although there are two instances of the aorist middle o...

Re: John 9:6 Position/Referent of αὐτοῦ

If αὐτοῦ is some kind of (partitive) object of the verb, then it's certainly in the right place in the sentence. On the other hand, John 9:11 Ὁ ἄνθρωπος ὁ λεγόμενος Ἰησοῦς πηλὸν ἐποίησεν καὶ ἐπέχρισέν μου τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς suggests that the αὐτοῦ of v.6 is to be construed with τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς (note her...

Re: John 9:6 Position/Referent of αὐτοῦ

John 9.6 ταῦτα εἰπὼν ἔπτυσεν χαμαὶ καὶ ἐποίησεν πηλὸν ἐκ τοῦ πτύσματος καὶ ἐπέχρισεν αὐτοῦ τὸν πηλὸν ἐπὶ τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς A student in my class took αὑτοῦ as referring to τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς. The position seems odd, I took it as referring to 'his clay' meaning the 'clay Jesus made'. It seemed to me that α...
