Re: επι - Matt 14:14, 15:32; 4:6, 14:11
Alford discusses the different cases used with ἐπί. I don't have his commentary digitized so can merely point to some pages at archive.org: Matt 19.28 (he sees a distinction between the one who rightfully sits on the throne and those who are, so to speak, promoted to that position -- but note there ...

Re: Subject of γράφειν in 1 Thess 4:9?
I am very grateful, Alex, for your observations and further clarification, which are most illuminating. As Stephen had posed the question I was looking in commentaries on 1 Thess 4.9 in particular, to see what had been said other than by BDF. I was impressed by the claims that an active infinitive c...

Milligan in his commentary (1908) says: The use of the act. inf. (γράφειν) for the pass. (γράφεσθαι, cf. 5.1) is too amply vouched for in similar combinations to cause any difficulty: see W[iner-]M[oulton] p.426, Buttmann p. 259 n1. “New Testament Semitisms”, David Alan Black, The Bible Translator 39/2 [April 1988], pp. 215-223. There's no complete version online, but a big chunk has been excerpted here. The complete article can in fact be viewed page by page at http://www.ubs-translations.org/tbt/1988/02/TBT198802.html?seq=17...

Re: ὁ Ἰησοῦς· The article with proper names
Well, the article I found said this: Steve Janssen wrote: Another idiom is the use of names with the preposition μετα. Names never have the article with μετα, though titles may. This can be seen in Matt 2:11; 4:21; 8:11; 26:69, 71; Mark 1:29; Acts 7:45; Galatians 2:1; Philippians 4:3; and Hebrews 1...

Re: ὁ Ἰησοῦς· The article with proper names
I think it's true, in any case, that "standard" usage of the definite article in ancient Greek is not very adequately delineated in standard grammatical authorities. Have Linguists been more successful in delineating that "standard" usage in the case of the ancient Greek definit...

Re: Luk 11:8 ἀναίδεια
To add to Dr Conrad's comment: If you can get to see it, there is an article by Klyne Snodgrass that focuses on the word ἀναιδεία. He examines 258 or more occurrences and shows it is always a negative term, absence of any sense of shame. Thus, he claims, it cannot be translated "to avoid being ...

Re: Matt 25:39 πρός σε
Apparently it's πρός that is the odd one out, at least in many MSS, and so this has led editors to write πρός σε etc. According to a footnote in Winer, Tischendorf in his 7th ed. wrote πρὸς μέ, σέ etc, but in the 8th ed he retained the accent on the pronoun in such cases only when the pronoun is emp...

Re: Phil 1:14 ἐν κυρίῳ
I thought "χριστος" is both a title and a proper noun, as there are places in which it can only function as a title but there are too many places where the article is dropped as if it has become so greatly associated with a particular person in the new testament that it was used as a prop...
