Re: Adjectival Use of Prepositional Phrases

Is it not possible that Paul is using a rhetorical device called syntaxis apo koinou in which the phrase is to be understood with both of the possible associated terms?

Handbook of Greek Verbs

I do not know whether this resource has ever been mentioned in B-greek. It could be useful for some people who listen in on this list. Complete Handbook of Greek Verbs. By N. Marione and F. Guala. Cambridrge, MA:Schoenhof's Foreigrn Books, Inc.; Milano: Casa Editrice Principato, 1961. ISBN 0-87774-0...

Dionysios Thrax

Some time ago someone said that the ancient Grammarian Dionysios Thrax was later than the first century B.C. All the sources I have for classical Greek date his grammar to the first century (OCD 3rd ed., Der Kleine Pauly, etc.). I would appreciate the bibliography that gives the evidence for the lat...

Jonathon, this is a play off Isaiah 51:2ff. There Abraham and Sarah are the rock from which Israel, God’s ekklesia is hewn. Peter if the counterpart to Abraham in Matthew (see Matt 1:1-2). Petra clearly refers to Peter. Ed Krentz

Re: Noun Case Endings & Verb Endings

Just for the sake of historical accuracy Greek in the age of Dionysios Thrax did not use accents in writing. They come into Greek orthography later. In Dionysios' day Greeks heard accents, whether tonal or stress accents. But they did not write them. Ed Krentz

Re: Jonah - short, easy, nice for early reading outside of G

Jonathon, The way one grows is to keep readingr texts that are more difficult than the NT. The LXX is good for this. I would suggest reading Psalms as a starter. They are short (not Ps 119!) and their content is familiar. But then move into the apocrypha. Try reading sections of Sirach, start with c...

Re: Default word order in Greek

Dear Friends of Greek, is there a consensus that the Default word order in Greek is verb-subject-object (direct-indirect) ? This question is important - I think - because all deviation from that order would indicate a special meaning (e.g. emphasis). Thank you for any comments Yours Peter There is ...

Re: Greek equivalents for Classroom sayings

Open this web site. Carl Conrad has supplied the English version of an older work giving classical Greek equivalents for many English/German phrases. Mutatis mutandis many would be useful also in koine Greek. Ed Krentz Re: [CLASSICS-L] Conversational Greek? FROM: ‪Wm Annis‬   TO: ‪CLASSICS-L@LSV.UKY...
