Re: John 6:29: ἱνα without any nuance of "purposed result"?
There has been some discussion about the "meaning" of ἱνα in another thread, which seems to have come to an end. All the examples discussed there could be taken to have some underlying notion of "purposed result" by David. But I want to verify BDAG 476-77 "very often the fi...

Re: Parsing of Rom 3:19 and ἵνα clause as complement
Woops! I am mistaken here. I should have know that "ινα τι" is a fixed expression for "why". Which is why I said, please stop continuing to hypothesize about Greek without much acquaintance with it. I hope that the following rendering may be declared to be possible :D : [...] If...

Re: John 1:9
I am reluctant to say anything here, but I have viewed the ongoing thread and thought about the matter. David cited my post of 1998 (16 years ago!) and asked my opinion. Much of my thinking on many matters has changed over those years, but upon consideration, I do still think that the simplest and ...

Re: Parsing of Rom 3:19 and ἵνα clause as complement
Moon, please answer my four questions first, and you will see why your current hypothesis about Rom 3:19 is quite impossible (though less impossible than your first one). Furthermore, if you know a bit of Greek you'll realize that "ινα τι ..." means "for what ..." / "why ......

Re: John 1:9
However, I concede that the writer can refer to this light already introduced as the "true light" somewhat "aggressively". He believes it and would think that the reader would not object to it. The problem is that "The true light was that which, coming into the world, illum...

Re: John 1:9
David's suggested rendering: The true light was that which, coming into the world, illuminates every person. My rendering [ to borrow some part from yours^^. Thanks for pointing to my wooden rendering] : He was the true light which, coming into the world, illuminates every person. David said: Your ...

Re: Parsing of Rom 3:19 (changed to non-telic use of ινα )
David said: I said that "ινα" heads a clause that denotes a purposed result . Also, I didn't say that it must describe the purpose for the preceding phrase. Now I can understand what David has been saying about ινα: I think that his view can be the same as that of Sim. The difference may ...

Re: Parsing of Rom 3:19
Firstly, it doesn't disprove what I said. Specifically, I said that "ινα" heads a clause that denotes a purposed result . Also, I didn't say that it must describe the purpose for the preceding phrase. I've always understood Smyth and LSJ to be referring to the broader notion of a purposed...

Re: John 1:9
When I read the above verse in context, it seems the most natural way to take the verse is: He was the true light who shines every person coming into the world. Here "coming into the world" is a circumstantial clause construed with ὅ ( the subject of φθτιζει), rather than with παντα ανθρω...

Re: Parsing of Rom 3:19
In this connection, I would welcome thoughts on Margaret Sim's study of ἵνα n a 2006 U. Edinburgh thesis called A Relevance Theoretic approach to the particle 'hina' in Koine Greek . Since you ask about this study, here is my opinion. :) Firstly, it doesn't disprove what I said. Specifically, I sai...
