Re: εὐγενής = open-minded?

Nor does LSJ give 'open-minded' as a meaning for εὐγενής. The complete text of the Menander's Dyscolus ("The grouchy old man") was only discovered in 1957, so the sense of "open-minded" not being in the LSJ can not be taken to mean that LSJ do not support (would not have support...

Re: 1 Peter 1:11

I understand that in essence, your son is asking whether ἐρευνῶ can possibly be used together with a preposition (εἰς), or whether in this case the prepositional phrase is a bit dissociated from the verb. Your son's question is good, but due to fact that the extant textual / inscriptional evidence f...

Re: Word Order in Mat 16,18

I think that that idea of 'implied verb' is unnecessary and distracting. That depends on what language you (as a reader) are used to dealing with and on the syntax of a given passage. Of course the cases inherently express relationship not meaning , but even when the grammatical relationship is und...

Re: Word Order in Mat 16,18

Hi Peter I think it is put in that order because there is no implied verb between τὴν ἐκκλησίαν and μου, as it would be in a τὴν ἐκκλησίαν μου (the church which I build / established / am the head of ...), in that way it has a direct relationship with the verb (as a reference external unchanged by t...

Re: Ptolemaic Papyri data in Turner Syntax Chapter 18

Thanks for the title. At that price and not knowing whether the contents will be valuable as a long-term reference, I'll wait till I go back to Sydney (NSW not NS) in a few months where there are real academic libraries and have a look at it first.

Ptolemaic Papyri data in Turner Syntax Chapter 18

In Chapter 18 of his Syntax, Turner seems to make good use of Rossberg's 1909 analysis of the Ptolmaic era papyri.

To my mind that data is for texts that are contemporaneous with the LXX.

Does anyone know of a similar study that is covers Imperial era papyri?

Re: James 1:21 ἐν πραΰτητι

I think if we look at some of the other usages of πρᾳότης (and it's adjective) it could shed some light on your question. Let's first consider the beatitude Μακάριοι οἱ πρᾳεῖς· ὅτι αὐτοὶ κληρονομήσουσιν τὴν γῆν..Mt.5:5 For now, let's just observe that an " inheritance " is something that i...

Re: The "other" αὐτῶν Jude 15 and meaning order for περὶ ...

I'm a little more attuned to the issue of "which text?" than most everyone else ... NA26/7/8 Well yes, it seems you are more attuned than anyone else I've ever known. If you need to know the exact date of the text I was referring to there are two, the recent is the Byzantine Text 28/9/05,...

Re: The "other" αὐτῶν Jude 15 and meaning order for περὶ ...

discussing the Byzantine reading of the text here Yes, you are right. I didn't mention it was such and such a manuscript, because it is not really something to do with the grammar that my question that I was asking. This is a question arising out of my personal reading, memorisation and meditation....

The "other" αὐτῶν Jude 15 and meaning order for περὶ ...

Has anyone got a solution as to how to fit the αὐτῶν, which comes after πάντας τοὺς ἀσεβεῖς in Jude 15 into the grammar, if one assumes that it was meant to be there and that Jude didn't just have bad Greek, and that he actually wanted it to be there for some reason best know to himself. The context...
