Re: Convertible propositions (John 1:4)
Time to lock this topic. I think we're well past productive discussion at this point, and I'd like to keep the Beginner's Forum beginner-friendly.

Re: Convertible propositions
A. T. Robertson thought so: In a word, then, when the article occurs with subject (or the subject is a personal pronoun or proper name) and predicate, both are definite, treated as identical, one and the same, and interchangeable. The usage applies to substantives, adjectives and participles indiff...

Re: Convertible propositions (John 1:4)
This thread mostly conflates grammar with logic. Grammar won't tell you if two propositions are convertible. Converting a proposition is the same thing as finding its converse . If a proposition is true, that does not mean its converse is true. This has nothing to do with grammar, and precious litt...

Re: Phil 3:7 ἥγμηαι: 4 Translations, 4 Different Renderings
What it really looks like is a knee-jerk conversion of the Greek perfect into what's thought to be the standard English equivalent, without much thought about "natural" English usage. I'm not sure what's going on with Lexham, but I'm pretty sure that's exactly what's going with Young's &q...

Re: Reverse Interlinears
But that doesn't mean we cannot borrow and adapt such tools for our own non-standard uses that go well beyond the their intended purpose. I, myself, use reverse interlinears for compiling grammatical judgments of translators. The ability to compile lists of how a given lexeme in a particular tense ...

Reverse Interlinears
I am looking at the Lexham Reverse Interlinear, described here: http://sblgnt.com/download/revint/01-Front%20Matter.pdf And downloadable here: http://sblgnt.com/download/ Should I consider this "just another interlinear"? What is the definition of "reverse interlinear"? Who is th...

Re: Phil 3:7 ἥγμηαι: 4 Translations, 4 Different Renderings
Let's look at this in some translations that claim to be careful about literal translation of this kind of form. Mounce Reverse Interlinear gets it right, so does the Amplified: Mounce Reverse Interlinear: But whatever things were gain to me, these I have come to regard as loss because of Christ. Am...

Re: The Gospel to be Read in Greek at the Papal Installation
Modern pronunciation, mostly chanted:

I'm guessing this would feel familiar to both Greek Catholics and Greek Orthodox.
