Re: Intro, Kirk
Hi, My name is Kirk, and I’ve joined principally to ask a fairly specific question, but I’m inclined to think that I’ll have many other questions about biblical Greek in future! Kirk Hi, Kirk. What experience do you already have in learning Greek? Could you please put your name in your signature so...

Re: Aorist stem formation
νυν οιδα, ω φιλε. ευχαριστω σοι. Why not think of a way to join these two sentences together using a participle? Perhaps turn οἶδα into a participle or use γινώσκω or μανθάνω instead. Would you still use a vocative if that were done? :) Perhaps something like: σοί, ὦ φίλε, εὐχαριστῶ ταῦτα γνούς. It...

Re: Intro: Brian Phillips
Well, there are so many BPs in the world. I think only those named Steve Smith have it worse. I was never at Ozark Christian College -- sorry! Ah, gotcha! Brian was our resident advisor when I was there for three years. A really great guy. Thought maybe our paths had crossed again so many years lat...

Re: Ephesians 1:4 "we are" or "we should be"?
In Ephesians 1:4, where do I go (text, tool, resource, or this forum) to find out why most translators translate "εἶναι ἡμᾶς" as "we should be" or "we would be"? It seems to me the phrase would best be "just as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world...

Re: Intro: Brian Phillips
I am going through a refresher course of Basics of Biblical Greek, William Mounce. I first went through this course about 25 years ago. I also hope to start a 1st year course on Biblical Hebrew soon. I'm a lay Christian who likes to learn. I'd like to be able to read most of the NT (and some LXX) i...

Re: God and Mark 12:32
Thank you! Now that you point it out, I can see that in a translation it might be more plain to say "God" rather than use a pronoun -- God knows there's enough pronoun vagueness going around. Before you continue posting, would you mind giving us your name in the signature section of your ...

Re: Aorist stem formation
For the most part, you’re asking this of people who learned Greek nomenclature from older books. I learned “first aorist” and “second aorist” because I learned Greek originally from Mounce’s Basics of Biblical Greek . It’s the terminology that I’m familiar with. Subsequently, I have completed the A...

Re: ξύλον translated as “tree” in Deuteronomy and Acts
I have not looked at these carefully, but here are places where a database glosses treats עֵ֖ץ as "tree". Most of these involve forms of δένδρον or χῦλον. ["GEN 2:9!7",עֵ֛ץ,"χύλον","tree"] ["LEV 19:23!7",עֵ֣ץ,"χύλον","tree"] [&qu...

Re: Introduction
Hello! I'm Adrian I'm currently a high school senior who has had an interest in Greek for some time. I taught myself first-year Greek with Mounce and second-year with Wallace, and I'm currently working on reading through the GNT (I have an NA28 as well as the free logos SBLGNT). Also working on Heb...

This would seem to have merit in my opinion.Eeli Kaikkonen wrote: ↑August 2nd, 2023, 11:53 am "it is possible, however, to interpret the indicative aorist forms not in terms of the gnomic (indicative) aorist but as overly literal renderings of the Biblical Hebrew "perfect" in its timeless use".
