This is pure data for the syntax trees. Some things you could do with it:

* Creating syntax diagrams with SVG or other graphic software
* Queries based on syntactic relations
* Comparing writing styles of authors

We are hoping that software folks will grab this data and use it, and I may be creating a query interface of my own. But for now, it's just data.

I've been playing with XSLT transforms on the Asia Bible Society syntax diagrams. Here is the first sentence of Ephesians in a graph rendered by Miles Shang's syntax tree generator:

Open the diagram in a new tab if it is not showing completely.

Several syntax tree diagram generators use the same text-based format for input, and it's pretty suitable for use on B-Greek. Here is the same syntax tree in text format:

Code: Select all

[S
  [CL
    [S
      [np
        [np
          [noun Παῦλος]
        ]
        [np
          [np
            [np
              [noun ἀπόστολος]
            ]
            [np
              [np
                [noun Χριστοῦ]
              ]
              [np
                [noun Ἰησοῦ]
              ]
            ]
          ]
          [pp

            ]
            [pp
              [prep ἐν]
              [np
                [np
                  [noun Χριστῷ]
                ]
                [np
                  [noun Ἰησοῦ]
                ]
              ]
            ]
          ]
        ]
      ]
    ]
  ]
]
I can easily generate that for any sentence in the GNT using the Asia Bible Society data, and it can be pasted into a syntax tree generator to produce the graphic version from the previous post.

Hi Johnathan,

I downloaded syntax tree files, but have no idea how to render them as pictures.

What software should be used for this?

Right now, it's just data, but I will figure out a good way to render the pictures and make them available as well. Watch this space.

Suppose I could create a character-based vertical display like this:

Code: Select all

S ─ CL ┌ S  ─ np ┌ np  ─ noun ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Παῦλος
       │         └ np  ┌ np  ┌ np  ─ noun ───────────────────────────────────────────── ἀπόστολος
       │               │     └ np  ┌ np  ─ noun ─────────────────────────────────────── Χριστοῦ
       │               │           └ np  ─ noun ─────────────────────────────────────── Ἱησοῦ
       │               └ pp  ┌ prep ─────────────────────────────────────────────────── διά
       │                     └ np  ┌ np  ────────────────────────────────────────────── θελήματος
       │                           └ np  ────────────────────────────────────────────── θεοῦ
       └ IO ─ np ┌ det ──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── τοῖς
                 └ np  ┌ np  ┌  np ── adjp ── adj ───────────────────────────────────── ἁγίοις
                       │     └  np  ┌ det ───────────────────────────────────────────── τοῖς
                       │            └ CL ┌  VC ── vp ── verb ─────────────────────────  οὖσιν
                       │                 └  P   ── pp ┌ prep ─────────────────────────  ἐν
                       │                              └ np ── noun ───────────────────  Ἐφέσῳ
                       ├ conj ────────────────────────────────────────────────────────  καὶ
                       └ IO  ┌  np ── adjp ─ adj  ───────────────────────────────────── πιστοῖς
                             └  pp ┌ prep  ──────────────────────────────────────────── ἐν
                                   └ np  ┌ np  ─ noun ───────────────────────────────── Χριστῷ
                                         └ np  ─ noun ───────────────────────────────── Ἱησοῦ
Is that user-friendly and useful?

Hi Jonathan,

Such vertical display is much better than trying to read XML code.

I found that similar has been done in Logos and Accordance Bible software packages:

http://www.accordancebible.com/store/de ... T-T.syntax

http://community.logos.com/forums/p/31585/234843.aspx

Playing with this software may suggest some insights how the display of syntax trees might be done the best way.

Yes, it looks very nice and clear.
