The Teaching of Greek at the Perse School, Cambridge

Post by Louis L Sorenson »

W.H.D. Rouse is known for his use of the direct method in teaching ancient Greek and Latin. The book (89 pages) by Christopher Stray, The Living Word: W. H. D. Rouse and the Crisis of Classics in Edwardian England ( London: Bristol Classical Press, 1992. Pp. v + 89, incl. 5 figures. ISBN 1-85399-262-3. UK£5.95) discusses the rise and fall of Rouse's methodology. (I've yet to see the book; see the review at http://www.classics.und.ac.za/reviews/93-2stra.html).

Another pamphlet, originally published in 1914 seems to be a review of the process. There is a similar review of the Latin experiment.

Also, some may be interested to know that W. H. D. Rouse's first and second year books have been reprinted and his first book thoroughly updated by Anne Mahoney (of Tufts University?) who also updated Morris' Stories in Attic Greek.

A Greek Boy at Home can be found on Internet Archive: http://www.archive.org/details/greekboy ... 01rousuoft. Anne Mahoney also revised it slightly. http://www.amazon.com/Rouses-Greek-Boy- ... pd_sim_b_3

From a reading of the introduction to Rouse's "A Greek Boy at Home," it seems he was the original TPRS man.

More Rouse books online in pdf can be found at: http://www.johnpiazza.net/ancientgreek

"A Greek Boy at Home"
"A Greek Boy at Home" - Vocabulary
"A First Greek Course"

I'm wondering whether CW Peckett's primer, Thrasymachus, might be useful for someone like me who is trying to teach Greek with TPRS.
Peckett followed Rouse's "direct method" for both Greek and Latin (Principia).
