Which Grammar Books Are These?

Post by Thomas Sandberg »

In Edward R. Maloney's 1901 "student/learner's" edition of St. Basil the Great: To Students On Greek Literature found here: https://archive.org/details/stbasilgreattost00basiuoft , in the Preface reads "The references are to the grammars of Hadley and Allen, Yenni, and Goodwin."

Can someone elaborate and point me to these grammars?

Hadley and Allen is grammar of Classical Greek.

By way of elaboration; Its section 74, Transfer of aspiration, has been supeceded by Grassman's law. Section 354, "augment is the sign of past time" is stated more absolutely than what happens in reality. Terminology like "principal tenses", the "theme of the verb" and "modes" are unfamiliar / less familiar now. The classified list of verbs in sections 507 - 539 seems quite useful for understanding the morphology of the Greek of the period that it covers. The principles of derivational morphology are well set out in sections 540 - 590. The (traditional) way that the meanings and the tense references of the verb that are set out in the syntax part have been discussed (developed) a lot recently.

Goodwin is the precursor to Smyth.
