A Lexicon to Josephus by H. St. J. Thackeray

Post by Louis L Sorenson »

I've been wondering how valuable this lexicon is. It seems like it was compiled in 4 parts at least. I'm not sure it was ever finished. Thackeray translated Josephus for the Loeb Library. He died at age 55 or so of heart disease. Here is a list of some of his books: http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/21 ... _Thackeray.

But his Lexicon to Josephus seems to have fallen off the map. http://www.worldcat.org/title/lexicon-t ... ef_results. Has anyone used it? Is it of any value?

Edited: The original post had his name as H. Saint James Thackery. Henry St. John Thackeray is the correct name.

I don't have an answer to your question, at least not yet. I have located it in a library near me so I may at least be able to tell you if he got to Ω or not!

But if I may offer a correction Thackeray's middle name is St. John, not as in your subject line. Also to be noted is that that name is not pronounced the way you might expect but as if it were Sinjn.

Apparently he was 61 when he died. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_St._John_Thackeray

I have seen four volumes, folio size, published by Librairie Orientaliste Paul Geuthner of Paris.
Vol. 1. 1930 by Thackeray alone, pp. x + 80, ἀβανήθ - ἀργός [last article continues in next volume]
Vol. 2. 1934 by Thackeray and Ralph Marcus. pp. 81 - 160, ἀργύρεος - διαστέλλειν
Vol. 3. 1948 by Thackeray and Ralph Marcus. pp. 161 - 208, διάστημα - ἐγγιόνιος
Vol. 4. 1955 by Thackeray and Ralph Marcus. pp. 209 - 256, ἐγείρειν - ἐμφιλοχωρεῖν [last article unfinished]

The entries are subdivided into senses and references quoted out at some length. Next to Thackeray's lexicon on the shelf was the Complete Concordance to Josephus by Rengstorf et al. That goes all the way to Ω in 4 vols and has glosses at the head of each entry in English and German. Presumably the appearance of that work has made it superfluous for anyone to finish Thackeray's work.
