Never heard of this one: Ancient Greek

Post by Peter Streitenberger »

Hello friends and colleagues,

I just came across of this interesting book, at least the title sounds interesting:

Ancient Greek - Intensive Review and Reference by Carl A.P. Ruck.

2002 • $35.00 • 304 pp • hardback • ISBN-10: 0-89089-426-4 • ISBN: 978-0-89089-426-2 • LCCN 2001095390

Can anyone say a word on it - I'm very interested and want to learn more. What I would like is an advanced grammar, as intros are enough at hand.

This was apparently intended to be an intermediate Greek textbook and reference work for students using Ruck's Ancient Greek - 2nd Edition Paperback – May 7, 1979: ISBN-13: 978-0262680318 ISBN-10: 0262680319 Edition: second edition.

I taught using Ruck's primer a couple times many years ago, decided that the JACT "Reading Greek" program would work better in my classes. I've not seen this "Intensive Review and Reference" but I would expect it to be of interest. The primer focuses sharply on learning to read classical Attic, with questions posed to the reader in Greek to be answered in Greek. Yet the focus was never really the spoken, but rather the written language. Randall would be quick to question the utility of an approach that steers clear of the spoken language.
οὔτοι ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς πάντα θεοὶ θνητοῖς ὑπέδειξαν,
ἀλλὰ χρόνῳ ζητέοντες ἐφευρίσκουσιν ἄμεινον. (Xenophanes, Fragment 16)

I ordered this book and after going through it, I have to say: forget it. It is beginner's level, nothing new and too expensive, all the charts are available in every intro book. Sorry, the money is wasted.
