Deciphering Robertson

Post by Scott Lawson » October 15th, 2013, 12:05 am

In speaking of the three fold usage the subjunctive Robertson gives (R.926):

1.) The volative
2.) The deliberative
3.) The futuristic

Can we open a new category that will allow us to ask for definitions in grammars such as Robertson's into intelligible modern day jargon?

Can someone help define the meanings behind these three usages of the subjunctive? PLEASE!

You have a good idea here, to have a category devoted to explaining unclear or archaic statements about Greek. I'm looking forward to hearing someone's attempt at making a new list of categories for the Subjunctive.

Funk's simple description might help with Roberts.

Personal opinion: Robertson is hard to decipher. He uses a lot of jargon that he does not clearly describe. Smyth is easier to read, so if you want to understand older terminology, using Smyth's explanations and Robertson's examples works for me.

If you don't care about learning older terminology, a more modern grammar is easier to work with. Again, though, Robertson's examples are worth their weight in gold.

Thank you Jonathan! I do in fact consult Smyth and I totally agree with your opinion on Robertson.
