Subheadings and references, electronic version?

Is anyone aware of a list of bible subheadings (they don't have to be too high quality) for the OT and NT, with associated references. I'm making some navigation for software.

It needs to be public domain or similar. My current plan is to rip the subheadings from an online text of Matthew Henry's commentary.

But is there something more current? Or something in a easier-to-user format?

You should check with the American Bible Society. They came up with the headers that are used in the UBS and most newer translations. I'm not sure what their copyright policy is about it, but it would be worth checking.

Well, the Lexham English Bible licensing is pretty open, it's as current as you can get, and you can grab the <pericope> and next <verse-number id="Ge 1:1"> from the XML at http://lexhamenglishbible.com/download/LEB.xml
I contributed the LEB Isaiah. I'd recommend checking with Logos's licensing people to see if they would have have any problem with your project using their headings.

For the NT, have you looked at http://openenglishbible.org/

OEB is getting there. Though I had the misfortune to open Colossians, and found "Christ and the Gnostic Teaching" as the subheading for Chapter 2, which I thought was overly interpretive.

Lexham is perfect. It looks to be great quality; sensible groupings, easy to parse too! I'll see how I go.

Thanks for the input, and don't let this go to your head, but I declare you to be "better than Google".

Well, Logos' staff didn't seem to understand the question, and referred me back to their license page. That lets me use it, but not relicense the subheads as CC-BY-SA, as far as I can see.

There are 2437 subheadings; with no apocrypha in the OT; here's Col 2 for comparison with OEB, above:

Code: Select all

2243 "Christ, the Mystery of God", "Col 2:1", "Col 2:5"
2244 "Made Alive in Christ", "Col 2:6", "Col 2:15"
2245 "Do Not Be Judged by Human Religious Rules", "Col 2:16", "Col 2:23"
This CSV file is on my website if anyone finds it useful; I'll likely combine the 2nd and 3rd column into a single reference before long (but that process is a little more involved).

Hi Nigel.

I'm actually probably the right guy to ask. My guess is that your understanding is proper — use, but no relicensing. I'll confirm and let you know what I find (I will also respond to this thread so the answer is preserved in context for posterity).

One item: Note the SBLGNT (and, thus, the LEB) handles the ending of Romans different than UBS/NA (SBLGNT/LEB include v. 24, omit vv. 25-27; NA/UBS omit v. 24 and include vv. 25-27); so if you're working on the assumption that the reference map of LEB matches that of UBS/NA, then you may want to account for it.

If you have further questions regarding the use of either LEB or SBLGNT in your work, let me know. Feel free to email directly, my first name @logos.com.

Hi Nigel.

Yes, I've talked with the necessary folks, and your use is fine with attribution. I'm guessing you'll have a page footer when the headings are used, and/or a generic info page with other translation/edition information; including the attribution in those locations is great.

The LEB license page (http://lexhamenglishbible.com/license/) has text like this for general usage:
Scripture quotations marked (LEB) are from the Lexham English Bible. Copyright 2012 Logos Bible Software. Lexham is a registered trademark of Logos Bible Software
Use "Pericope Headings" or "Section Headings" (whichever you think would be most appropriate for your audience) instead of "Scripture quotations marked (LEB)". Follow the same linking guidelines (link "Lexham English Bible" to LexhamEnglishBible.com and "Logos Bible Software" to logos.com).

Please let me know if you have further questions.

Thanks Rick --

Yes, I'm pretty sure the normal license will suffice. I'll flag these records ccBySa=false, so that they're part of the infrastructure rather than the data set. I appreciate your time and assistance; that solves one of my longer-standing data problems.

I've put a final version of the CSV online with exact references and license info; I can send anyone an SQL version if that's useful.

My favorite "sub" heading was: "Detailed Stipulations: Purity and Unity", "Deuteronomy 12:1-26:19"
