Acrobat Pro does ok OCR, but it's a single language tool. It cannot do mixed text, at least as of v 9. I haven't tried v 10.

The Perseus project published a very detailed document several years ago on OCR for Greek:

http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/publicatio ... eprint.pdf

There are lots of stats and they also detail much of their procedure.

Thanks so much Ken,

Wow, ABBYY certainly does a much better job than whatever U of T used (scribe13 is it?) for Souter. At least the Greek looks Greek, but still a lot of manual correction is required. The other factor with the JPEG2000 scans of Souter is that some (the ones I looked at anyway) are pretty light. Increasing the contrast on the scans might help, at least get the English correct.

What puzzles me is why they even bother making epub and mobi versions of Souter and some of the other scanned lexicons that are available on archive.org...

Thanks Alex...very interesting paper! My next question was about the state of Open Source OCR. I have tried various tools like gocr and ocrad on mixed text without much success. OCRopus/Tesseract looks very promising.

There are two strands on Textkit talking about OCR:

Re: Look what I found! Greek downloads!! Other languages too http://www.textkit.com/greek-latin-foru ... ocr#p84931

Re: Looking for Classical Greek OCR Software: http://www.textkit.com/greek-latin-foru ... ocr#p81589

I use ReadIris Pro 12 which can do both Greek and English. It needs some training. But it would be nice to be able to force these programs to use a certain unicode range. A lot of time I find it uses the modern Greek vowel with accents (a different Unicode range than Polytonic).

I installed Tesseract 3.0 yesterday (this is very easy on Fedora). I have never used OCR software before, I was very impressed by how well it did with both Greek and English texts.

With Funk's grammar, it did a good job on the English if I said the text was English, and a good job on the Greek if I said it was Greek. But I haven't yet figured out how to tell it that the text contains both ...

Jonathan: OCRopus, mentioned in the .pdf file to which Alex referred, may help with multi-lingual texts: "OCRopus(tm) is a state-of-the-art document analysis and OCR system, featuring pluggable layout analysis, pluggable character recognition, statistical natural language modeling, and multi-lingual capabilities."

I haven't been as successful with Tesseract so far (I'm using Mandriva 2010.2), which has version 2.04 and no Greek language files. I'll probably have to build version 3 from source in order to use the ell.traineddata file available on google code.

I installed Tesseract 3.0 with the Greek training data on Fedora 14. It is a standard package, so I just did this:

$ yum install tesseract tesseract-langpack-ell

I'll try Ocropus - thanks!
