Favorite Greek-related Blogs?

Post by Jonathan Robie »

What are your favorite blogs that discuss items related to biblical Greek?

Those which I check regularly that most often cut to the core of Biblical Greek concerns are:

Greek Language and Linguistics - Micheal Palmer (http://grklinguist.wordpress.com/)
Included here is a good introductory online primer that's unfinished but very well-developed.

Hypotyposeis - Stephen Carlson (http://hypotyposeis.org/weblog/)
Title ("annotations") taken from Clement of Alexandria: highly specialized, usually concise notes on recondite matters

NTDiscourse - Steve Runge (http://www.ntdiscourse.org/)
Focus on the HOW of Biblical Greek discourse delivered with a gratifyingly serious effort to avoid linguistic jargon

NT Resources Blog - Rod Decker (http://ntresources.com/blog/)
A variety of observations by one of the best seminary teachers of Biblical Greek, often bearing upon his work on the Baylor commentary on the Greek text of Mark's gospel

ΕΝ ΕΦΕΣΩ Studies in Greek Language & Linguistics… - Michael Aubrey (http://evepheso.wordpress.com/)
Little or nothing about Ephesians (just as well, from my perspective) but very thoughtful observations and reports about reading on matters of Greek Linguistics

Biblical Language Center - Randall Buth (http://www.biblicallanguagecenter.com/category/blog/)
Where Randall sets forth the hows and whys of a Greek pedagogy dependent on use of Biblical Koine as a vehicle of liv communication between living speakers and listeners, writers and readers

Better Bibles Blog - Wayne Leman et al. (http://betterbibles.com/)
Frequently expounding why some versions convey more accurately and clearly the meaning of particular GNT (and OT Hebrew) texts. Iver Larsen has had some fine entries here.
οὔτοι ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς πάντα θεοὶ θνητοῖς ὑπέδειξαν,
ἀλλὰ χρόνῳ ζητέοντες ἐφευρίσκουσιν ἄμεινον. (Xenophanes, Fragment 16)

I know...I know. I'm basically stuck with the name. I have 350 subscribers. If I switched to a new blog with a new name, I'd probably loose about half of them.

I've attempted to state what the blog is actually about with the subtitle--kind of like what books do where the subtitle is more informative than the main title.

I'd also add Nick Nicholas' blog:

Ἡλληνιστεύκοντος: An occasional blog on Greek linguistics (broadly meant) "Making Greek more googleable (through English)"
http://hellenisteukontos.blogspot.com/

Nick works with on TLG and wrote his dissertation on που, if I remember correctly. You'll find him discussing just about everything from Mycenaean to Modern.

Other than that, I don't know of any more dedicated Greek language/linguistics blogs. Carl's covered things rather well. I wrote a post about blogs that occasionally discuss Greek a ways back (before I found Nick's blog, which I've copied and updated below. Not all are created equal and there might be a couple that need to be moved to the "dead" category.

Blogs that Regularly Discuss the Greek Language:
http://www.billmounce.com/blog (also seen as Monday’s with Mounce at Zondervan’s blog)
http://greek-language.com/grklinguist/
http://greeklinguistics.blogspot.com/ (in Greek, my Modern Greek reading skills are extremely poor, but I can read some of this with consistent recourse to the dictionary)
http://www.ntdiscourse.org/
http://ntresources.com/blog/
http://evepheso.wordpress.com/

Blogs that On Occasion Discuss the Greek Language:
http://jeltzz.blogspot.com/ (the author wrote his master's thesis on John Chrysostom's homilies in John)
http://readbetterpreachbetter.com/ (group blog)
http://powerscourt.blogspot.com/

Blogs that Discuss Greek Texts (whether regularly or on occasion):
http://evangelicaltextualcriticism.blogspot.com/ (group blog)
http://sonofthefathers.wordpress.com/
http://benjiovercash.wordpress.com/ (quiet lately)
http://www.katagraphais.com/
http://www.pastoralepistles.com/
http://www.supakoo.com/rick/ricoblog/
http://textcommunitymission.wordpress.com/
http://agaphseis.wordpress.com/ (author has inconsistent internet because he's in Oceania)

Other:
http://cybergreek.uchicago.edu/index.html/ (Helma Dik – it's mainly used for her classes, not for the general public).
http://biblicallanguages.wordpress.com/
http://ancienthebrewpoetry.typepad.com/
http://betterbibles.com/
http://www.hellenisti.com/

Dead Greek Blogs:

I don't browse blogs much. Ones I find that have interesting resources related to Greek in some way I'll put here.

Koinonia: biblical-theological conversations for the community of Chist http://www.koinoniablog.net/ is a blog hosted by Zondervan Academic. It has posts from Mounce and Wallace, among others.

One of my favorites is Greeking Out, http://www.greekingout.com, by our own Refe Turma. It is fairly new but has quite a few thought-provoking articles, and a useful ongoing series of reader helps for Ignatius in the Apostolic Fathers, among other good resources. (And it doesn't hurt that Refe is graciously hosting my Gospel of John translation project there, which I am finally getting to start posting... :D )
