Concordance including all the versions?

Post by Stephen Hughes »

Is there a GNT concordance that lists the variants of the major text, rather than just based on a single (eclectic) text?

Funny you should ask that, for I have been working on such a thing for the past 3 weeks (at least for all texts up to 400 AD). I could already easily tell you what verses contain a particular spelling of any word that appears in my collation, but the words were not parsed so I could not tell you what the lexical entry for that word is supposed to be or what verses contained alternate spellings of that word. A normal modern GNT text has about 17500 different words. However, there are almost 29000 different words among all the texts in my collation (http://cntr.t15.org). In order to identify the 29000 words, I started with the 17500 words we already know from the NA and SBL texts. Then I used an automated process with my collation which knows alternate spellings and got it up to 22000 words identified. Next I added in all the words that Perseus knows and got it up to 24500 words. The last 4500 words I have been identifying by hand. Many of these words are not in BDAG. I now have the remaining list down to 500 words which need to be identified and I will continue to tackle that over the next few days. I hope to get the remaining list as small as possible and then when I get to the point where I can’t figure any more of them out, I plan on bothering you guys with the remaining words. Of the 500 remaining, I have already given up on about 100 of them, but still have 400 more to go. I will keep you posted.

You've moved from the Google Drive http://bunning.gweb.io/ then. You could ask one of the moderators to change the URLs in your previous posts so they are not dead links to an important resource.

For the 400, they could be spelling mistakes (word-level scribal errors) that you are picking up.

Yes, the website has moved and it will probably be moved again within the next few weeks. The one I am using now still has the content on it, but it won't let me update it. I keep using these free websites and they keep pulling the rug out from under me. I guess you get what you pay for!

Okay, after whittling 29000 words down to about 100 or so that still need to be identified, I now invite you to play the game I have been playing the last few weeks: “What is that word?” The 1st column contains the word in question, the 2nd column contains a word that it might be trying to be (assuming it might be a spelling error), the 3rd column is the manuscript where the word is found, and the forth column is the book, chapter, and verse (Matthew = book 1). You can use my website http://cntr.t15.org/manuscripts.htm to look them up in context if you want. I don’t think any of these are in BDAG or Perseus so you are on your own. Here is round 1:

ακαρτω, ακαθαρτω, GA-05, 3:08:29
αλεκτυων, αλεκτωρα, TM-64243, 2:14:30
αμαρτητος, αμαρτησαντος, GA-01, 6:05:16
ανακεινων, ανακειμενων, GA-04, 1:22:10
ανεχθεισης, ενεχθεισης, GA-04, 22:01:17
ανθρωπειν, ανθρωπινη, GA-P72, 21:02:13
απανπληθει, παμπληθει, GA-029+, 3:23:18
απολακυψον, ?, GA-032, 2:16:14
αποσειμπανως, ?, GA-P72, 21:02:21
αποστατησαντα, αποσταντα, GA-02, 5:15:38
απτυξας, αναπτυξας, GA-05, 3:04:17
αυλαιαι, λυχνιαι, GA-02, 27:11:04
βουονται, ?, GA-04, 9:06:13
βρωθη, πληρωθη, GA-05, 3:22:16
χαλιναγων, χαλιναγωγων, GA-04, 20:01:26

The winner of the game gets our love and respect. Can you identify any of these words?

P.S. Jonathan can move this to a different forum if this one is not appropriate.

Could this be a form of βιβρώσκω?

αλεκτυων, αλεκτωρα, TM-64243, 2:14:30
ἀλεκτρυών - missing ρ.
Alan Bunning wrote:αποσειμπανως, ?, GA-P72, 21:02:21
While not necessarily agreeing with the correction, this is referred to in its "corrected" dictionary form ἀπολιμπάνω*, under the BDAG entry for "ὐπολιμπάνω".

Probably αποκαλυψον (ἀποκάλυψον), "reveal yourself", in the phrase δια τουτο απολακυψον σου την δικαιοσυνην ηδη, where changing it to δια τουτο αποκαλυψον σου την δικαιοσυνην ηδη makes sense out of it - "therefore reveal your righteousness now".

This is part of a unique ending to Mark called the Freer Logion that is fairly interesting. A few references below.

I think αποστατησαντα is probably a form of ἀπο·στατέω, αποσταντα is a form of ἀφίστημι.

Incidentally, the Bambas edition of Septuagint uses αποστατησαντα in Isaiah 30:1 ΟΥΑΙ ΕΙΣ ΤΑ ΑΠΟΣΤΑΤΗΣΑΝΤΑ ΤΕΚΝΑ, where my Septuagint says ουαι τεκνα αποσταται.
